Sabrina Benaim
Sabrina Benaim (born November 30, 1987, in Toronto, Canada) is a writer, performance artist, and slam poet. Benaim was a winner of the 2014 Toronto Poetry Slam. She is best known for her poem "Explaining My Depression To My Mother." Personal life Sabrina Benaim was born November 30, 1987, in Toronto, Canada. She was a member of Canadian championship-winning 2014 Toronto Poetry Slam Team. She is currently a coach of the 2016 Toronto Poetry Slam (TPS) team. At age 23, Benaim was found to have a benign tumor in her throat. She took to performance poetry as a way to cope with her health complications, and to raise awareness for issues like anxiety and depression. She also represented Toronto at the Women Of The World Poetry Slam. Career She took off on social media through her poem "Explaining My Depression To My Mother." Women Of The World Poetry Slam
The Women of the World Poetry Slam (WoWPS) is an annual poetry slam put on by Poetry Slam, Inc. The tournament features individual slam poets from around the world that "live their lives as women" competing to be the highest ranked woman poet in the world. History In 2008, the Women of the World Poetry Slam (WoWPS) was introduced, in which only female and female-identified poets are allowed to compete. WoWPS was the brainchild of Kimberly Simms (PSI EC 2005-2007) and Deborah Marsh. The first WoWPS was held in Detroit, Michigan and the first champion was Andrea Gibson. Each tournament is held in a different city. Candidate cities submit bids and go through a vetting process. In late 2015, the languaging around inclusion was updated to read: "Competition at WOWps is limited to poets who live their lives as women. Button Poetry
Button Poetry is a Minneapolis-based poetry company and independent publisher of performance poetry. They are known for their viral videos of slam poetry performances, including a performance of "OCD" by Neil Hilborn that the Knight Foundation called "the most-viewed slam performance in history." History Button Poetry was founded in 2011 by Sam Van Cook to promote performance poetry through video and social media. Genius is an American digital media company founded on August 27, 2009, by Tom Lehman, Ilan Zechory, and Mahbod Moghadam. The site allows users to provide annotations and interpretation to song lyrics, news stories, sources, poetry, and documents. Originally launched as Rap Genius with a focus on hip-hop music, the company attracted the attention and support of celebrities, and venture capital enabling further growth. The site expanded in 2014 to cover other forms of media, such as pop, literature, R&B, and added an annotation-embedded platform. That same year, an iPhone app was released.
