SS Santa Rosa (1932)
SS ''Santa Rosa'' (later SS ''Athinai'') was a passenger and cargo ocean liner built for the Grace Line for operation by its subsidiary Panama Mail Steamship Company of San Francisco. She was the first to be launched and operating of four sister ships, the others in order of launch being (11 June 1932), ''Santa Lucia'' (3 October 1932) and (30 November 1932). All four ships, dubbed "The Four Sisters" and "The Big Four" were noted as the finest serving the West Coast and were of advanced technology. All served in World War II as War Shipping Administration (WSA) troop ships. Both ''Santa Lucia'' and ''Santa Elena'' were lost in air and torpedo attacks off North Africa. The ship was ordered in 1930 from the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company of Kearny, New Jersey. Federal Shipbuilding And Drydock Company
The Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company was a United States shipyard, active from 1917 to 1948. It was founded during World War I to build ships for the United States Shipping Board. During World War II, it built ships as part of the U.S. Government's Emergency Shipbuilding program. Operated by a subsidiary of the U.S. Steel, United States Steel Corporation, the shipyard was located at Kearny Point where the mouth of the Hackensack River meets Newark Bay in the Port of New York and New Jersey. The shipyard site is now part of River Terminal, a massive distribution facility that is partially a Foreign trade zones of the United States, foreign trade zone. Federal built numerous destroyers, destroyer escorts and a handful of light cruisers as well as merchant ships during and between the wars. Aliağa is a town and a district of Izmir Province in the Aegean Region of Turkey. The town is situated at about north of Izmir. Aliağa has a large port, mainly for oil and bulk cargo. Its economic activity is based on tourism, shipbreaking, and an oil refinery. Overview and history Aliağa lies in the heart of ancient Aeolia. Typaldos Lines
Typaldos Lines, formally known as the Aegean Steam Navigation Company, was a privately held Greek shipping company based in the port of Piraeus, Greece. In 1956 the company had registered its headquarters in London, UK. after operating earlier as ''Typaldos Brothers Steamship Co. Ltd.'' The company purchased retired ships and refitted the vessels for passenger cruises and ferry services in the Mediterranean and Greek islands. In 1966 the ferry ''SS Heraklion'' sank in the Aegean Sea and over 200 passengers and crew members perished. In 1968 the Greek government investigation of the ''Heraklion'' incident found the ship's owners guilty of manslaughter, negligence, and document falsification. SS ''The Emerald'' was a cruise ship owned by Louis Cruise Lines (now Celestyal Cruises). She was built in 1958 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock company in Newport News, Virginia, United States, for the Grace Line, as the ocean liner ''Santa Rosa''.
