SPL Karjalan Piiri
The SPL Karjalan piiri ''(Karelia Football Association)'' is a former district organisation of the Football Association of Finland. It administered football in the North Karelia area. Background Suomen Palloliitto Karjalan piiri, commonly referred to as SPL Karjalan piiri or SPL Karjala, was the governing body for football in the North Karelia area. The organisation was founded in May 1930 and was based in Sortavala. It is not clear when the association ceased operating but it is known that 4 clubs broke away from their own area to form the SPL Joensuun piiri on 18 December 1938. Sortavala
Sortavala (russian: Сортавала; Finnish and krl, Sortavala; sv, Sordavala); till 1918 Serdobol (russian: Сердоболь) is a town in the Republic of Karelia, Russia, located at the northern tip of Lake Ladoga near the Finnish border, west of Petrozavodsk, the capital city of the Republic of Karelia. The closest city on the Finnish side of the border is Joensuu, which is located from Sortavala. In 2021 the population of Sortavala was 19,215. History The district of Sortavala was first recorded in Swedish documents dating to 1468. Russian documents first mention it as Serdovol or Serdobol in 1500. It was ceded to Sweden after the Ingrian War. With the 1721 Treaty of Nystad, the settlement was joined to Russia along with the rest of Old Finland and was given the Russian name Serdobol. Finnish District Football Associations
The District Football Associations are the local governing bodies of association football in Finland. The 12 District FAs exist to govern all aspects of local football in their defined areas, providing grassroots support to the Finnish Football Association by promoting and administering football and futsal in their respective districts. The District FAs administer youth football and the lower tier leagues covering Kolmonen (Division 3) and the lower divisions. The Football Association of Finland ( fi, Suomen Palloliitto, abbr. SPL; sv, Finlands Bollförbund) is the governing body of football in Finland. It was founded in Helsinki on 19 May 1907. The SPL organises the men's and women's national football teams, and the second and third tiers of national football. The premier division Veikkausliiga is organized by a distinct organisation, and the lower tiers (the fourth tier and below) are organized by the 12 district organisations. Joensuun Palloseura
Joensuun Palloseura (abbreviated JoPS) is a football club from Joensuu, Finland. JoPS is Joensuu's oldest football club having been formed in 1929. The club has competed in the second tier of Finnish football over 6 seasons, the last time being in 1968. JoPS currently plays in the Kolmonen section that covers Eastern and Central Finland. History JoPS has covered the sports of bandy, pesäpallo, football, and tennis. The football club officially began operations in 1930, the same year as the Karelian District Football Association was founded. In the 1940s, JoPS was the leading bandy club of North Karelia. The team rose to the Premier Division in 1940 and remained in the highest division until 1949 without winning any medals. In the early 1950s, JoPS lost the number one club status for bandy in the city of Joensuu, and started to invest more in football. JoPS dominated the North Karelian football until the 1970s.
