Groupe Canal+ is a French mass media company. It is owned and controlled by Vivendi and has a film library in excess of 5,000 films. Vivendi has sold some parts of Canal+ to private investors which are still using the name of Canal+. It is headquartered in Issy-les-Moulineaux, in the suburbs of Paris. The ''Wall Street Journal'' described Canal+ as "the French film industry's biggest financial backer, beloved by French cineastes". It is a major source of finance for domestic film production, participating in the financing of the vast majority of films produced in France. It also has its own subsidiary companies with direct involvement in film production. ''Film1'' is a Dutch premium television and video on demand service that replaced Canal+ and is owned by SPI International (previously owned by Liberty Global and Sony Pictures Television). Background The service launched with three channels and a high-definition and timeshift version of the main channel. On 1 October 2008 ''Film1 Action'' was added to the line up. ''Film1 Series'' started on 17 January 2012 when it replaced the 1 hour timeshift channel ''Film1 Premiere +1''. On 20 September 2012 Film1 announced that they would be launching an online GO service with Tvinci.
