General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed (born 1 December 1963) is a Bangladesh Army general who is serving as the 17th Chief of Army Staff (CAS) of the Bangladesh Army since June 2021. Prior to his appointment as CAS, he served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army Training and Doctrine Command, Quartermaster general (QMG) of Bangladesh Army, Director General of Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS), Director of Military Training (DMT), the Commander of an Infantry Brigade and an Infantry Division, Early life and academics Shafiuddin Ahmed was born on 1 December 1963 in a reputed Muslim and freedom fighter's family in Khulna. General ( bn, জেনারেল, Jēnārēla) is a four Star commissioned flag officer rank in the Bangladesh Army. It is the highest achieved rank in the Bangladesh Army. General ranks above the Three Star rank of Lieutenant general. The rank is denoted as a full-fledged General to extricate subordinate officers like Lieutenant general and Major general. Bangladesh Infantry Regiment
The Bangladesh Infantry Regiment (BIR) is an infantry regiment ( regimental system type) of the Bangladesh Army. It was raised in 2001 as the second combat regiment after the East Bengal Regiment. The East Bengal Regiment ( bn, ইস্ট বেঙ্গল রেজিমেন্ট) is an infantry regiment ( regimental system type) and the largest military formation of the Bangladesh Army. History The East Bengal Regiment was formed on 15 February 1948, following the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan in 1947.
