SMS ZPRP Gdańsk was a men's handball team based in Gdańsk, Poland. SMS Gdańsk were one of three "Sports Championship Schools" in Poland run by the Poland Handball Federation. Handball and Education The school itself focused on the education of its students, but also has a strong focus on the development of the students in handball. Due to the association of the club with the Poland Handball Federation the club could not be promoted to the Superliga, but also could not be relegated to the 2. Liga either, providing consistent competitiveness for the students. From the teams formation in 1997 until the school was closed in 2021, nearly 100 players went from playing and developing with SMS Gdańsk to playing in the Superliga, Poland's highest handball league. Polish Superliga (men's Handball)
The Polish Superliga, also known as the PGNiG Superliga for sponsorship reasons, is the top men's handball league in Poland. The current champion is Vive Kielce, the most titled Polish handball club, maintaining its position at the top of the table continuously since 2012. It is currently a 14 teams league from September to May. The competition was founded in 1956 under the name ''I Liga'' and changed its name to ''Ekstraklasa'' in 1998. Since 2010, it is named ''Superliga''. Kwidzyn (pronounced ; german: Marienwerder; Latin: ''Quedin''; Old Prussian: ''Kwēdina'') is a town in northern Poland on the Liwa River, with 38,553 inhabitants (2018). It is the capital of Kwidzyn County in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. Geography Kwidzyn is located on the Liwa River, some east of the Vistula river, approximately south of Gdańsk and southwest of Kaliningrad. It is part of the region of Powiśle. Handball (also known as team handball, European handball or Olympic handball) is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outcourt players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. Modern handball is played on a court of , with a goal in the middle of each end.
