Selma (Bijelo Dugme Song)
Selma is a rock ballad recorded in former Yugoslavia by the influential Bosnian rock band Bijelo Dugme. This song appeared for the first time on their 1974 debut album ''Kad bi bio bijelo dugme''. Background "Selma" is a song about a young girl traveling to university. The narrator is saying goodbye to her, and he cannot express his feelings for her, all he can say is goodbye and please do not lean out of the train window. The text of the song was written by Vlado Dijak, a former Yugoslav poet and songwriter, based on a real event in 1949, when he accompanied Selma Borić, the young Zenica-born girl in which he was secretly in love with, to the train station in Sarajevo. The music was composed by Goran Bregović. Versions Studio version The version that we hear on the record is approximately six minutes and ten seconds in length. The song has two verses, but the second verse is repeated for the 3rd verse. There is an organ solo done by organist Vlado Pravdić as well as guitar r ...

Selma (name)
Selma is a feminine name of ambiguous origin. It could be a form of '' Selima'', which in turn is a name first recorded in a poem by Thomas Gray (died 1771). One possibility is that ''Selima'' was influenced by the Arabic name '' Selim'' meaning "peaceful". Hanks; Hardcastle; Hodges (2006) p. 243. In Turkey the name is a variantion of the Arabic female name Salma. The name may also have Celtic origins, in which case it means "beautiful view". The use of ''Selma'' in Germany and Scandinavia stems from the Ossianic poetry of James Macpherson (died 1796), where it appears as a place name. Fellows-Jensen (2006) pp. 134–136. Vigsø (2001). Its specific popularity in Sweden is likely due to the Selma poems of Frans Michael Franzén (died 1847). It was later introduced into Denmark by Swedish immigrants, after which it likely became more common due to the works of the author Selma Lagerlöf (died 1940). The given name lost popularity in Sweden during most of the 20th century, but ha ...

Selma (Leesburg, Virginia)
Selma is a historic property and former plantation in Loudoun County, Virginia, near Leesburg. Selma is best known as the residence of Armistead Thomson Mason (4 August 1787–6 February 1819), a U.S. Senator from Virginia from 1816 through 1817. History The lands of Selma were once a part of the Northern Neck Proprietary owned by Lord Fairfax, and Selma was a part of the tract bought around 1741 by Stevens Thomson Mason. Selma was built at the base of Catoctin Mountain overlooking a sweeping vista of lawn and pastureland between 1800 and 1810 by Armistead Thomson Mason. Mason came to be known as the "Chief of Selma." Due to a political quarrel between Mason and his cousin Colonel John Mason McCarty, he and McCarty dueled at the Bladensburg dueling grounds in Bladensburg on 6 February 1819. Mason and McCarty chose Bladensburg as the location of their duel due to Virginia's recently enacted anti-dueling law. Mason died at the first shot, while McCarty was spared by an ac ...
