SCBWI
The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization that acts as a network for the exchange of knowledge between writers, illustrators, editors, publishers, agents, librarians, educators, booksellers and others involved with literature for young people. The SCBWI has more than 22,000 members worldwide, in over 80 regional chapters, making it the largest children's writing organization in the world. History In 1971, the organization was founded as the Society of Children's Book Writers by a group of Los Angeles-based writers, including the group's President Stephen Mooser and Executive Director Lin Oliver. Authors Judy Blume and Jane Yolen sat on the original board and continue to be involved today. In October 1973, details were announced for the Golden Kite Award, the only children's literary award judged by a jury of peers. Sue Alexander
Sue Alexander (August 20, 1933 – July 3, 2008) was an American writer of children's literature. She authored 26 books for children as well as "scores of stories" for newspapers and magazines. She was also a children's book reviewer for the ''Los Angeles Times''. She was a charter member and advisory board member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, which established two awards in her name in recognition of her efforts to educate and mentor aspiring writers. Early life and education Sue Lynn Ratner was born in Tucson, Arizona, to Jack M. Ratner and Edith Pollock Ratner. Her family was Jewish. She had one younger brother. When she was a year old her family relocated to Los Angeles and when she was five they moved to Chicago. Lin Oliver
Lin Oliver (born February 2, 1947) is an American writer, producer, and the co-founder (with Steve Mooser) of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. During the 1990s and early 2000s, she wrote and produced a number of works for television and film, notably the 1990s television show, ''Harry and the Hendersons.'' As an author of books for children, Oliver began collaborating on the '' Hank Zipzer'' series with actor Henry Winkler in 2003. They next created the prequel series ''Here's Hank'', the ''Ghost Buddy'' series, and the ''Alien Superstar'' series. Childhood and education Oliver was born in Los Angeles, California, and was the editor-in-chief of her school newspaper at Ulysses S. Grant High School. Pat Cummings (illustrator)
Patricia Marie Cummings (born November 9, 1950 in Chicago) is an American writer and illustrator of children's books. Early life Her father was in the Army, and her family lived in different locations from Europe to Asia when she was growing up. She remembered "My brother and sisters and I were always the 'new kids', but I found that art helped me to get to know my classmates." Growing up, her parents would read them stories about fairytales, which fueled her imagination as she explored castles on the Rhine River and villages on Okinawa. She attended Pratt Institute in New York City. After graduation Ms. Cummings initially freelanced for editorial and advertising clients before focusing exclusively on children's books. Jerry Pinkney
Jerry Pinkney (December 22, 1939 – October 20, 2021) was an American illustrator and writer of children's literature. Pinkney illustrated over 100 books since 1964, including picture books, nonfiction titles and novels. Pinkney's works addressed diverse themes and were usually done in watercolors. In 1994, Pinkney obtained the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award for the book '' John Henry'' and he has received five Coretta Scott King Awards for illustration. This is a list of children's classic books published no later than 2008 and still available in the English language. Books specifically for children existed by the 17th century. Before that, books were written mainly for adults – although some later became popular with children. In Europe, Gutenberg's invention of the printing press around 1440 made possible mass production of books, though the first printed books were quite expensive and remained so for a long time. Gradually, however, improvements in printing technology lowered the costs of publishing and made books more affordable to the working classes, who were also likely to buy smaller and cheaper broadsides, chapbooks, pamphlets, tracts, and early newspapers, all of which were widely available before 1800. Lisa Yee
Lisa Yee (born August 27, 1959) is a Chinese American writer and the author of ''Millicent Min, Girl Genius'' (2003), '' Stanford Wong Flunks Big-Time'' (2005) and '' So Totally Emily Ebers'' (2007). The three books are a part of a trilogy, summarizing the three pre-teens' experiences in Rancho Rosetta in the summer. An additional book, ''Warp Speed'' (2011), was written. Ruta Sepetys ( lt, Rūta Šepetys; born November 19, 1967) is a Lithuanian-American writer of historical fiction. As an author, she is a ''New York Times'' and international bestseller and winner of the Carnegie Medal. She is a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Fellow and the first American writer of young adult literature to speak at the European Parliament and NATO.
