SA Agulhas
''S. A. Agulhas'' is a South African ice-strengthened training ship and former polar research vessel. She was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Shimonoseki, Japan, in 1978. ''S. A. Agulhas'' was used to service the three South African National Antarctic Programme research bases, Gough Island, Marion Island in the Southern Ocean and SANAE IV in Antarctica, as well as various research voyages. ''S. A. Agulhas'' retired from Antarctic service in April 2012 when the replacement vessel, '' S. A. Agulhas II'', was commissioned. She was transferred to the South African Maritime Safety Authority as a training ship. History Rudder damage In December 1991, ''S. A. Agulhas'' suffered rudder damage while in the Antarctic. Named after Khoikhoi woman, Sarah Baartman, she was built by Damen Group, of the Netherlands, at one of its Romanian shipyards, and was designed to be capable of patrolling South Africa's entire EEZ, including the area around the southerly Prince Edward Islands. ARA ''Almirante Irízar'' is a large icebreaker of the Argentine Navy. She was ordered from a shipyard in Finland in 1975. A fire broke out in her auxiliary generator compartment in 2007, putting her out of commission until April 2017. Background The ship was named after Julián Irízar. In 1903, when he held the rank of Lieutenant, he commanded the Argentine corvette during a successful mission to rescue the Swedish Antarctic Expedition of Professor Otto Nordenskjöld, after the expedition had been trapped by the Antarctic winter. MV ''Captain Kurbatskiy'' (''Капитан Курбацкий'') was a Russian SA-15 type cargo ship originally known as ''Nizhneyansk'' (''Нижнеянск'') after a port of the same name. The ship was delivered from Valmet Vuosaari shipyard in 1983 as the second ship of a series of 19 icebreaking multipurpose arctic freighters built by Valmet and Wärtsilä, another Finnish shipbuilder, for the Soviet Union for year-round service in the Northern Sea Route. These ships, designed to be capable of independent operation in arctic ice conditions, were of extremely robust design and had strengthened hulls resembling those of polar icebreakers.
