Semiramis
''Samīrāmīs'', hy, Շամիրամ ''Šamiram'') was the semi-legendary Lydian- Babylonian wife of Onnes and Ninus, who succeeded the latter to the throne of Assyria, according to Movses Khorenatsi. Legends narrated by Diodorus Siculus, who drew primarily from the works of Ctesias of Cnidus,Diodorus Siculus: The Library of History, Book II, Chapters 1-22 describe her and her relationships to Onnes and King Ninus. Armenians and the Assyrians of Iraq, northeast Syria, southeast Turkey, and northwest Iran still use ''Shamiram'' as a given name for girls. The real and historical Shammuramat (the original Akkadian form of the name) was the Assyrian wife of Shamshi-Adad V (ruled 824 BC–811 BC). She was the ruler of the Neo-Assyrian Empire as its regent for five years before her son Adad-nirari III came of age and took the reins of power. She ruled at a time of political uncertainty, which is one of the possible explanations for why Assyrians may have accepted the rule of a woman w ...

Sémiramis (tragedy)
''Sémiramis'' (1746) is a tragedy in five acts by Voltaire, first performed in 1748 and published in 1749. Action The plot is very similar to that of Voltaire's earlier unsuccessful tragedy '' Ériphyle''. The action takes place in a courtyard in front of the palace of Sémiramis in Babylon, in front of the Hanging Gardens. Sémiramis, after having her husband Ninos poisoned, now rules the Babylonian Empire. She now decides to marry the stranger Arsace instead of Assur, Prince of the Bélus. Arsace learns that he is in fact Ninias, the son, presumed dead, of Sémiramis and Ninos. Assur tries to eliminate his rival Arsace; Sémiramis tries to save her son, but is mortally wounded by him in a scuffle. Arsace/Ninias thereby avenges his father's death. Dispute with Crébillon When Voltaire was given the opportunity to write a piece of grand theatre to commemorate the birth of the dauphin’s first son in 1746, he selected the apparently inappropriate story of the ancient queen S ...

Semiramis (band)
Semiramis is an Italian progressive rock band who produced one LP in 1973, ''Dedicato a Frazz''. History The band was formed in 1970 by Maurizio Zarrillo (keyboards) and two cousins Marcello Reddavide (bass) and Memmo Pulvano (drums); they were all 15 years old. Two years later they were joined by 16-year-old Michele Zarrillo who replaced former singer Maurizio Macioce. They played in some live, open-air concerts in Rome until Pulvano left and Paolo Faenza joined on drums. Their only album, ''Dedicato a Frazz,'' released by Trident Records in 1973 was commercially unsuccessful, but later became regarded as a classic Italian progressive rock album. The album featured a cover by Gordon Faggetter. According to a favorable review, "Semiramis pile it on from every angle. Synths go awry, voices scream, guitars go a hundred miles a second, drums jettison you across the room. How could a group compose so many ideas? There are literally 15 albums on this!" After the band split up, singer ...

Sémiramis (Catel)
''Sémiramis'' is an opera by the composer Charles-Simon Catel. It takes the form of a ''tragédie lyrique'' in three acts. The French-language libretto by Philippe Desriaux is based on the 1748 tragedy of the same name by Voltaire, which concerns the legendary Queen Semiramis of Babylon. ''Sémiramis'', Catel's first opera, premiered at the Paris Opéra on 4 May 1802. It enjoyed only limited success and suffered many attacks from critics. The composer had to wait until 1810 before the Paris Opéra gave him another opportunity with a new opera, ''Les bayadères'', which was a triumph. Performance history ''Sémiramis'' enjoyed 24 performances at the Opéra. Several factors played a part in its lacklustre reception. Catel was Professor of Harmony at the newly founded Paris Conservatoire, a position which had already made him enemies. The high standards the Conservatoire imposed led to the dismissal of members of staff who failed to meet them. Some took the opportunity of the premier ...

Semiramide
''Semiramide'' () is an opera in two acts by Gioachino Rossini. The libretto by Gaetano Rossi is based on Voltaire's tragedy ''Semiramis'', which in turn was based on the legend of Semiramis of Assyria. The opera was first performed at La Fenice in Venice on 3 February 1823. ''Semiramide'' was Rossini's final Italian opera and according to Richard Osborne, "could well be dubbed ''Tancredi Revisited''". As in ''Tancredi'', Rossi's libretto was based on a Voltaire tragedy. The music took the form of a return to vocal traditions of Rossini's youth, and was a melodrama in which he "recreated the baroque tradition of decorative singing with unparalleled skill". The ensemble-scenes (particularly the duos between Arsace and Semiramide) and choruses are of a high order, as is the orchestral writing, which makes full use of a large pit. After this splendid work, one of his finest in the genre, Rossini turned his back on Italy and moved to Paris. Apart from ''Il viaggio a Reims'', which i ...
