The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar or SECAM ( French: Symposium des Conférences Épiscopales d'Afrique et de Madagascar) is an agency of the Catholic Church which includes the bishops of Africa and Madagascar. History The SECAM was born, on the occasion of the Second Vatican Council, to express the will of the African bishops to speak and act together, overcoming the language difference, historical and cultural. The project, submitted to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, was approved in 1968. The Symposium was convened for the first time during the visit of Pope Paul VI to Uganda in 1969. Organization SECAM includes a presidential council, a General Secretariat, and special committees: the Committee on doctrinal and pastoral, social and legal committee, the Committee on Finance and Administration, the Committee for African Affairs, the union of African collaboration. Polycarp Pengo
Polycarp Pengo (born 5 August 1944) is a prelate of the Catholic Church who was Archbishop of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, from 1992 to 2019. A bishop since 1983, he was made a cardinal in 1998. Biography Polycarp Pengo was born on 5 August 1944. He was ordained a priest in 1971, he studied Moral Theology in Rome at the Pontifical Lateran University, obtaining a doctorate in 1977. He taught Moral theology in Kipalapala Theological Seminary for a short time, and then became the first Rector of Segerea Theological Seminary in Dar-es-Salaam up to 1983. He was made Bishop of Nachingwea (now Lindi) in 1983, and of Tunduru-Masasi in 1985. In 1990 he was named Coadjutor Archbishop of Dar es Salaam, and in 1992 he became Archbishop of Dar-es-Salaam, following the resignation of Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa. The Episcopal Conference of the Indian Ocean (french: Conférence Épiscopale de l'Océan Indien, italics=yes, CEDOI) is the episcopal conference of the Catholic Church which includes the following Indian Ocean archipelagic states: Comoros, Mauritius, Réunion, Mayotte and Seychelles. History Since 1974, the bishops of the Indian Ocean islands would gather each year in an informal meeting. In 1976 the Holy See recognized this assembly with the name of Pastoral Zone of the South West Indian Ocean islands. Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops' Conference
The country's Catholic bishops met in the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Zimbabwe (Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops' Conference, ZCBC), established by the Holy See on October 1, 1969. The statutes of the Conference were approved on March 25, 1981. Uganda Episcopal Conference
The Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC) or Episcopal Conference of Uganda is the local conference of Roman Catholic bishops in Uganda, established in 1960. The UEC acts primarily through the Uganda Catholic Secretariat in an effort to promote and coordinate social and pastoral ministry of the Catholic Church of Uganda. This task is performed through twelve committees including the liturgical-pastoral, dedicated to the apostolate of the laity, the Board of justice and peace, as education and training of priests, and those on ecumenism and interreligious dialogue.
