Switzerland Men's National Junior Ice Hockey Team
The Switzerland men's national under 20 ice hockey team is the national under-20 ice hockey team of Switzerland. The team is controlled by the Schweizerischer Eishockeyverband, a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation. History Switzerland played its first game in 1977 against the Soviet Union during the 1978 IIHF World U20 Championship. Switzerland lost the game 1–18 and finished last in the tournament and were relegated to the Pool B tournament for the following year. After winning the 1979 Pool B tournament of the 1979 IIHF World U20 Championship they were promoted back to the top Pool A championship. During the 1980 IIHF World U20 Championship Switzerland suffered their worst defeat in international participation after being beaten by Finland 1–19. The Swiss Ice Hockey Federation (SIHF) (german: Schweizerischer Eishockeyverband (SEHV), french: Ligue Suisse de Hockey sur Glace (LSHG), it, Federazione Svizzera di hockey su ghiaccio ) is the governing body of ice hockey in Switzerland, as recognized by the International Ice Hockey Federation, International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). It was founded in 1908 and is a founding member of the IIHF. It manages both the Regio League, amateur and National League (ice hockey), professional games in Switzerland, as well as the national teams on junior and senior levels. 1998 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships
The 1998 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships (''1998 WJHC'') were held in Helsinki and Hämeenlinna, Finland. The championships began on December 25, 1997, and finished on January 3, 1998. Home team Finland was the winner, defeating Russia 2–1 in the gold medal game, thanks to the goaltending of Mika Noronen and the overtime heroics of Niklas Hagman. Switzerland defeated the Czech Republic 4–3 to capture the bronze medal, their first and only medal in the Ice Hockey World Junior Championship. Canada had its five-year title streak broken with its worst placing to date (8th). Canada would miss out on gold seven years in a row before beginning their 2005–2009 streak of five straight championships. It was the only tournament from 1993 to 2012 in which Canada failed to medal. This tournament attracted 139,680 fans to 34 games for an average of 4,108 per game. 2012 IIHF World U20 Championship
The 2012 IIHF U20 World Championship (commonly known as the 2012 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships) was the 36th edition of the Ice Hockey World Junior Championship. It was hosted in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It began on December 26, 2011, and ended with the gold medal game played in Calgary on January 5, 2012. Sweden defeated defending-champion Russia 1–0 in overtime to win their first title in 31 years. Russian forward Evgeny Kuznetsov was named MVP of the tournament. Denmark was relegated to Division I and Germany was promoted to the 2013 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. Canada missed the final for the first time in 11 years when they lost 6–5 against Russia in a semifinal in which Canada were down 6–1 halfway through the third period. 2009 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships – Division I
The 2009 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship Division I was two international ice hockey tournaments, the second level of the 2009 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. The winners of each group were promoted to the Top Division for the 2010 IIHF World U20 Championship, while the last place teams in each group were relegated to Division II for the 2010 IIHF World U20 Championship. The 1995 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships (''1995 WJHC'') was the 19th edition of the Ice Hockey World Junior Championship and was hosted in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada with games held throughout central Alberta. Austria Men's National Junior Ice Hockey Team
The Austrian men's national under 20 ice hockey team is the national under-20 ice hockey team in Austria. The team represents Austria at the International Ice Hockey Federation's IIHF World Junior Championship. History Austria made its first Pool A appearance in 1981, however, after being relegated the team spent several years competing in either Pool B or Pool C. In 2000, the Austrians defeated Slovenia 6–2 to advance out of Pool C and into Division I for the 2001 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. Austria finally qualified for the top level for 2004, by defeating Norway 6–4 in their final contest. Austria however was relegated back to Division I for 2005. The team has been unable to maintain a steady presence as part of the Top Division, their most recent appearance being in 2010. Soviet Union National Junior Ice Hockey Team
The Soviet Union men's national under 20 ice hockey team was the national under-20 ice hockey team in the Soviet Union. The team represented the Soviet Union at the International Ice Hockey Federation's IIHF World U20 Championship. The team has won eleven gold medals (first three unofficial, once more as CIS men's national junior ice hockey team, CIS), three silver medals, and two bronze medals at the World U20 Championships. At the 1987 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, the team was disqualified as a result of the Punch-up in Piestany versus the Canada men's national junior ice hockey team. Soviet administrator Yuri Korolev (ice hockey), Yuri Korolev expressed regret that the incident occurred but did not admit any guilt.
