Swiss People's Party Group
The Swiss People's Party group (german: Fraktion der Schweizerischen Volkspartei, french: Groupe de l'Union Démocratique du Centre, it, Gruppo dell'Unione democratica di Centro, abbreviated V) is the largest parliamentary group in the Swiss Federal Assembly. It regroups the Swiss People's Party and other minor parties or independents caucusing with them. Composition In the 47th legislature (2003–2007) the group contained the SVP/UDC and the Ticino League. In the 48th legislature (2007–2011) it was joined by the Federal Democratic Union (EDU) then by the Romandy Citizens' Movement (MCR) for the 49th legislature (2011–2015). The National Council (german: Nationalrat; french: Conseil national; it, Consiglio nazionale; rm, Cussegl naziunal) is the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Switzerland, the upper house being the Council of States. With 200 seats, the National Council is the larger of the two houses. Adult citizens elect the council's members, who are called National Councillors, for four year terms. These members are apportioned to the Swiss cantons in proportion to their population. Both houses meet in the Federal Palace of Switzerland in Bern. Rudolf Minger (13 November 1881 – 23 August 1955) was a Swiss politician and member of the Swiss Federal Council (1929–1940). He also was a farmer all his life. He was elected to the Federal Council on 12 December 1929 and handed over office on 31 December 1940. Thomas Minder (born 26 December 1960 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland) is a Swiss entrepreneur and politician. Minder was elected to the Swiss Council of States for the canton of Schaffhausen in 2011. He is an independent but sits with the Swiss People's Party.
