Swimming At The 2012 Summer Paralympics – Men's 400 Metre Freestyle S7
The men's 400 metre freestyle S7 event at the 2012 Paralympic Games took place on 6 September, at the London Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park, London. The event was for athletes included in the S7 classification, which is for competitors with physical impairments. Sixteen swimmers took part, representing a total of thirteen different nations. Great Britain's Josef Craig set a new world records in both the heats and the final as he won the gold medal. Competition Heats Two heats were held, each with eight swimmers; the swimmers with the eight fastest times advanced to the final. The heats took place on 6 September starting at 9:51 BST. British swimmer Josef Craig won the first heat while setting a new world record time of four minutes, 45.79 seconds. London Aquatics Centre
The London Aquatics Centre is an indoor facility with two swimming pools and a diving pool in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. The centre, designed by architect Zaha Hadid as one of the main venues of the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics, was used for the swimming, diving and synchronised swimming events. After significant modification, the centre opened to the public in March 2014. Design The centre was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid in 2004 before London won the bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Jay Dohnt
Jay Dohnt (born 20 November 1989 in Adelaide, South Australia) is a Paralympic swimming competitor from Australia. He is a bilateral below the knee amputee as a result of meningococcal disease at the age of thirteen. He is also missing four fingers on his right hand. He chose swimming as legs were not required to do it and obtained a scuba diving ticket. Career In 2006, he was the only competitor in the men's freestyle multi-disability section of the 2006 Australian Open Water Swimming Titles in Melbourne, Victoria (Australia), Victoria. Francesco Bocciardo (born 18 March 1994) is an Italian Paralympic swimmer who competes in international level events. He is a triple World and European champion, he has participated at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and the 2016 Summer Paralympics where he was the Paralympic champion in the men's 400m freestyle S6. Biography Bocciardo has a disability called spastic distal tetraplegia which affects the movement in his legs, he was encouraged to do swimming as a part of rehabilitative therapy at a young age then he started swimming competitively in 2010 at the Italian national championships. Josef Isaac Craig, MBE (born 17 February 1997) is a retired British Paralympic swimmer. Craig competed in S8 events and qualified for the 2012 Summer Paralympics, winning gold in a world record time in the men's 400 m freestyle event. Personal life Craig was born in Hebburn, Tyne and Wear on 17 February 1997. Craig, who has cerebral palsy, was introduced to disability swimming at the age of nine, before entering competitive swimming a few years later. Noted as a swimming talent from a young age, and ear-marked for the Great Britain team at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Craig's career suffered a setback when he was diagnosed with Graves' disease in 2011.
