London Aquatics Centre
The London Aquatics Centre is an indoor facility with two swimming pools and a diving pool in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. The centre, designed by architect Zaha Hadid as one of the main venues of the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics, was used for the swimming, diving and synchronised swimming events. After significant modification, the centre opened to the public in March 2014. Design The centre was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid in 2004 before London won the bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics. It was built alongside the Water Polo Arena and opposite the Olympic Stadium on the opposite bank of the Waterworks River. The site is high, long, and wide. Torben Schmidtke
Torben Schmidtke (born 24 February 1989) is a German Paralympic swimmer who competes in international level events. He specialises in freestyle swimming and breaststroke swimming where he has won two Paralympic medals, two World medals and three European medals. Schmidtke was born with dysmelia in his legs and has three fingers on his left hand, he had his right foot amputated in October 2018 due to severe pain relating to his health condition. He is a bilateral below the knee amputee as a result of meningococcal disease at the age of thirteen. He is also missing four fingers on his right hand. Matthew Whorwood (9 December 1989) is a British Paralympic swimmer. Whorwood, who swims mainly in S6 events has competed in two Paralympic Games winning three bronze medals in freestyle and breastroke events. Career history Whorwood was born in Truro in Cornwall in 1989. Whorwood, who has Achondroplasia, started swimming at his local club at the age of 12. He later joined Newquay Surf Life Saving and from there got involved in competitive swimming. Whorwood represented Great Britain in the 2006 IPC Swimming World Championships, winning two silver medals in the 400m freestyle and 200m individual medley. His results since 2006 saw him qualify again for the British team, this time in the 2008 Summer Paralympics.
