Beijing National Aquatics Center
The National Aquatics Centre (), and colloquially known as the Water Cube () and the Ice Cube (), is an aquatics center at the Olympic Green in Beijing, China. The facility was originally constructed to host the aquatics competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. During the Olympics — where it hosted diving, swimming and synchronized swimming events — 25 world records were broken in swimming. In July 2010, a renovation of the facility was completed, which included the addition of a public water park. Anne Cecile Polinario (born 5 August 1979) is a S10 classified Canadian para-swimmer. Born to parents on Cuba's national swim team, she caught on and was on Canada's National Team. Polinario has competed at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Paralympic Games. Personal life Polinario was born on 5 August 1979 in Havana, Cuba and now resides in Montreal, Quebec. She had Drop Foot Paralysis in her left foot at birth. She started swimming at a young age and moved to Canada as a teenager. She made it into Canada's national swimming team while her mother and father were in Cuba's National Swimming Team. Career Polinario's headed for here first Paralympic games in 2000 Sydney, where she won three bronze medals in 100m Backstroke, 100m Freestyle, and 50m Freestyle. Katrina Cecchini (; born 17 June 1988) is an Australian Paralympic swimmer. She was born in Canberra with mild cerebral palsy due to being born ten weeks premature. She started swimming at the suggestion of a neighbour. She attended St Mary MacKillop College, Canberra, graduating in 2006. Her philosophy is "You may be classed as disabled but never take the 'dis' out of disabled, take the 'able' and you will get where you want to be." Swimming At The 2008 Summer Paralympics
The swimming events of the 2008 Summer Paralympics were held in the Beijing National Aquatics Center between September 7 and September 15, 2008. A total of 140 gold medals were expected to be distributed. Paralympic records were broken in 122 events, of which the records in 108 events were also world records. Classifications Athletes are allocated a classification for each event based upon their disability to allow fairer competition between athletes of similar ability. The classifications for swimming are: *Visual impairment **S11-S13 *Other disability **S1-S10 ( Freestyle, backstroke and butterfly) **SB1-SB9 (breaststroke) **SM1-SM10 (individual medley) Classifications run from S1 (severely disabled) to S10 (minimally disabled) for athletes with physical disabilities, and S11 (totally blind) to S13 (legally blind) for visually impaired athletes.
