Swimming At The 2004 Summer Olympics – Women's 50 Metre Freestyle
The women's 50 metre freestyle event at the 2004 Olympic Games was contested at the Olympic Aquatic Centre of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex in Athens, Greece on August 20 and 21. Dutch swimmer and world record holder Inge de Bruijn managed to defend her title in this event, outside her record time of 24.58 seconds. The silver medal was awarded to France's Malia Metella, with a time of 24.89 seconds. Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre
The Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre is a complex at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex, consisting of two outdoor pools and one indoor pool, that was built for the 1991 Mediterranean Games. It was refurbished and expanded for the 2004 Summer Olympics. The larger of the outdoor pools, which seats 11,500 spectators, hosted Swimming at the 2004 Summer Olympics, swimming and Water Polo at the 2004 Summer Olympics, water polo events. The smaller pool, which hosted Synchronized Swimming at the 2004 Summer Olympics, synchronized swimming, sat 5,300 fans. The indoor pool, which hosted the Diving at the 2004 Summer Olympics, diving events, sat 6,200 observers. It is used for swimming, too. Kara Lynn Joyce
Kara Lynn Joyce (born October 25, 1985), is an American former competition swimmer and four-time Olympic silver medalist. She competed as a member of the United States Olympic Team at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Early years Joyce was born in Brooklyn, New York. She split her high school years between Irondequoit, New York at Eastridge High School, Webster, New York and Ann Arbor, Michigan, where the family relocated to in 2001. It was in Ann Arbor that Joyce began training with Club Wolverine under Jon Urbanchek. Joyce also chose to compete for her high school team, the Ann Arbor Pioneers. In her senior year of high school, she set five Michigan high school state records, four of which were national high school records at the time. Martina Moravcová
Martina Moravcová (born 16 January 1976) is a Slovak medley, butterfly, and freestyle swimmer. She made her international swimming debut in 1991 for Czechoslovakia, and has gone on to compete in five consecutive Summer Olympics (1992–2008). She is a two-time Olympic silver medalist, both achieved at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. In the 100-meter butterfly, she finished second to Inge de Bruijn, and in the 200-meter freestyle, she finished eight one-hundredths of a second to home favorite Susie O'Neill. Cristina Chiuso
Cristina Chiuso is a former Italian swimmer. Italian record holder of 50 freestyle and 4x100 freestyle relay in short and long course, was captain of Italian women swimming team. She has participated four times at the Olympic Games (Barcelona 1992, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008) and 5 times at the Swimming world championships (Fukuoka 2001, Barcelona 2003, Montreal 2005, Melbourne 2007, Rome 2009). Dorothea Brandt
Dorothea Brandt (born 5 March 1984) is a German swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle and breaststroke events. She is a multiple-time German champion, a fourteen-time medalist at the European Short Course Swimming Championships, and a semi-finalist in the 50 m freestyle at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Rebeca Gusmão (born August 24, 1984) is a former freestyle swimmer from Brazil. She won the bronze medal in the women's 4×100 m freestyle relay at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She also participated at the 2004 Olympics and the 2007 Pan American Games. Gusmão won the women's 50 and 100 freestyle events at the 2007 Pan Ams; however, all her results (times and placings) from those Games were later nullified due to a positive doping-control test. Nery Mantey Niangkouara ( el, Νέρι Νιαγκουάρα) (born March 14, 1983 in Athens, Greece) is a Greek swimmer. She began her career at Nereus Halandri and then moved on to Panathinaikos. In 2001, she won 2 silver medals at the Mediterranean Games in the 100m and relay races. She was 5th in the European Championships in 2002 in Relay 4Ch100. She won the first medal for the Greek colors in the European Swimming Championships in Madrid, with a time of 55.05 in the 100m free. Eileen Mary Coparropa Alemán (born March 31, 1981 in Panama City) is a freestyle swimmer from Panama, who won a silver and a bronze medal in the women's 50m freestyle event at the Pan American Games. Nicknamed "La Sirena de Oro" she represented her native country at three consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1996.
