Swimming At The 1980 Summer Olympics – Men's 200 Metre Freestyle
The men's 200 metre freestyle event at the 1980 Summer Olympics was held on 21 July at the Swimming Pool at the Olimpiysky Sports Complex. There were 42 competitors from 24 nations, with each nation having up to three swimmers. The event was won by Sergey Koplyakov of the Soviet Union, with his countryman Andrey Krylov finishing second. The medals were the first for the Soviet Union in the men's 200 metre freestyle. Graeme Brewer of Australia won that nation's first medal in the event since 1968 with his bronze. Background This was the sixth appearance of the 200 metre freestyle event. It was first contested in 1900. It would be contested a second time, though at 220 yards, in 1904. After that, the event did not return until 1968; since then, it has been on the programme at every Summer Games. Swimming Pool At The Olimpiysky Sports Complex
The Swimming Pool at the Olimpiysky Sports Complex was a covered swimming centre in Moscow, Russia. The venue, built for the 1980 Summer Olympics, makes up the Olimpiysky Sports Complex architectural ensemble together with the Olimpiysky Arena. During the Olympics, it hosted the swimming, diving, water polo, and the swimming part of the modern pentathlon events. It also hosted 2002 Short Course World Championships. The venue consists of a 50x25x2,25m swimming pool (with capacity for 7,500 spectators), separated by an acoustic partition from the 35x25x6 m diving pool (with capacity for 4,500 spectators). Bruce Furniss
Bruce MacFarlane Furniss (born May 27, 1957) is an American former competition swimmer, Olympic gold medalist, and former world record-holder in four events. At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, he won the 200-meter freestyle and was a member of the winning U.S. team in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay, both in world record time. Swimming career Furniss broke ten world and nineteen American records, and won eleven Amateur Athletic Union and six NCAA titles. He was an integral part of USC's NCAA National Collegiate Championship winning teams of 1976 and 1977. While at USC, Furniss was coached by the legendary Peter Daland, who guided the school's men's swimming team to nine National Titles in his 35 years as the school's coach (1957 to 1992). Ivar Stukolkin (born 13 August 1960) is a retired Estonian swimmer. He is an Olympic champion in swimming. Detlev Grabs
Detlev Grabs (born 29 October 1960) is a German researcher in anatomy and cell biology and a retired East German swimmer. He competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics and won a silver medal in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay; he failed to reach the finals in the 200 m and 400 m freestyle events. He was also part of the East German team that finished third in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay at the 1977 European Aquatics Championships. After retiring from swimming, between 1984 and 1990 he studied human medicine at the Humboldt University in Berlin, defending his PhD in 1990. Then until 1997 he worked as a post-doc at the Institute of Anatomy, Berlin (1990–1997); University of Ulm, Germany (1992); and Yale University, United States (1994–1996). Thomas Lejdström (born 31 May 1962) is a former Swedish freestyle and medley swimmer, who competed in the 1980 and 1984 Summer Olympics. In 1984 Lejdström won a bronze medal in 4×100 m freestyle relay along with Bengt Baron, Mikael Örn and Per Johansson.
