Swimming At The 1972 Summer Olympics – Men's 100 Metre Freestyle
The men's 100 metre freestyle event at the 1972 Olympic Games took place between September 2 and 3. There were 48 competitors from 29 nations. Nations had been limited to three swimmers each since the 1924 Games (except in 1960, when the limit was two). The event was won by Mark Spitz of the United States, his then-record sixth gold medal in a single Games (he would add a seventh in the medley relay, for a record that stood until Michael Phelps won eight in 2008). It was the ninth victory in the event for an American, most of any nation. Jerry Heidenreich, also of the United States, took silver. Soviet swimmer Vladimir Bure (father of future hockey hall of famer Pavel Bure) earned bronze, the nation's first medal in the men's 100 metre freestyle. The Olympia Schwimmhalle is an aquatics centre located in the Olympiapark in Munich, Germany. It hosted the swimming, diving, water polo, and the swimming part of the modern pentathlon events at the 1972 Summer Olympics. José Aranha
José Roberto Diniz Aranha (born 2 February 1951 in São Paulo) is a former international freestyle swimmer from Brazil, who competed at two consecutive Summer Olympics for his native country, starting in 1968. Between 1968 and 1972, he went to live and train in the United States. At the 1967 Pan American Games, in Winnipeg, he swam the 400-metre freestyle, not reaching the finals. At the 1968 Summer Olympics, in Mexico City, he swam the 100-metre freestyle and the 4×100-metre medley (along with José Fiolo, João Costa Lima Neto and César Filardi), not reaching the finals. Greg Rogers
Gregory Francis Rogers (born 14 August 1948) is an Australian former sprint freestyle swimmer of the 1960s and 1970s, who won a silver and bronze medal in the 4×200-metre and 4×100-metre freestyle relays, respectively, at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. His brother Neil also competed as an Olympic swimmer. Hailing from Sydney, Rogers was eliminated in the semifinals of the 100-metre freestyle, and the heats of the 400-metre freestyle event. Brian Phillips (born March 30, 1954) is a Canadian former competitive swimmer who won four medals in major international championship events during the early 1970s. Phillips won a total of six medals in major international championships, including the FINA World Championships, Pan American Games and Commonwealth Games. As a 17-year-old at the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia, Phillips won silver medals as a member of the second-place Canadian teams in the 4x100-metre freestyle and 4x200-metre freestyle relay events. John Murphy (swimmer)
John Joseph Murphy (born July 19, 1953) is an American former backstroke and freestyle swimmer who won a gold medal as a member of the U.S. team in the men's 4×100-meter freestyle relay at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. At the 1972 Olympics, the 19-year-old also earned a bronze medal in the men's 100-meter backstroke. Mike Wenden
Michael Vincent Wenden, (born 17 November 1949) is a champion swimming (sport), swimmer who represented Australia in the 1968 Summer Olympics and 1972 Summer Olympics. In 1968 he won four medals: gold in both the 100- and 200-metre freestyle (setting world records in each) and a silver and a bronze in freestyle relays. Wenden was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1979. He was one of the eight bearers of the Olympic Flag at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
