The men's 400 metre freestyle was a swimming event held as part of the swimming at the 1924 Summer Olympics programme. It was the fourth appearance of the event, which was established in 1908. The competition was held from Wednesday July 16, 1924 to Friday July 18, 1924. Records These were the standing world and Olympic records (in minutes) prior to the 1924 Summer Olympics. Johnny Weissmuller
Johnny Weissmuller (born Johann Peter Weißmüller; June 2, 1904 – January 20, 1984) was an American Olympic swimmer, water polo player and actor. He was known for having one of the best competitive swimming records of the 20th century. He set numerous world records alongside winning five gold medals in the Olympics. He won the 100m freestyle and the relay team event in the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris and the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. Weissmuller also won gold in the 400m freestyle, as well as a bronze medal in the water polo competition in Paris. Following his retirement from swimming, Weissmuller played Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan in twelve feature films from 1932 to 1948; six were produced by MGM, and six additional films by RKO. Weissmuller went on to star in sixteen ''Jungle Jim'' movies over an eight year period, then filmed 26 additional half-hour episodes of the Jungle Jim TV series. George Vernot
George Edward Vernot (February 27, 1901 – November 22, 1962) was a Canadian freestyle swimmer who competed at the 1920 and 1924 Olympics. At the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Vernot won a silver medal in the 1500-metre freestyle, and a bronze medal in the 400-metre event. He also competed in the 100-metre freestyle, but placed third in his semifinal and did not advance. At the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, he was seventh in the 400-metre freestyle, and eighth in the 1500-metre freestyle. Nationally, Vernot won the Canadian championships in the 100-, 220-, and 440-yard freestyle in 1919, and 220- and 440-yard in 1920. In 1926 he graduated in civil engineering from McGill University and retired from athletic competitions. He then worked for the City of Montreal, becoming chairman of the Board of Assessors in 1948. Harold Edward Annison (27 December 1895 – 27 November 1957) was an English competitive swimmer, water polo player, and Olympic medallist who represented Great Britain in international competition. He competed in the 1920 and 1924 Summer Olympics. In the 1920 Antwerp Olympics he won a bronze medal in the men's 4×200-metre freestyle relay, and was fourth in his first heat of the 100-metre freestyle event, fifth in the semifinal of 400-metre freestyle event, and third in the semifinal of 1500-metre freestyle event, but did not advance in any event. Four years later at the 1924 Paris Olympics, he was eighth in the 400-metre freestyle event, ninth in the 1500-metre freestyle event and fifth in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay event. was a Japanese freestyle swimmer who competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics and in the 1928 Summer Olympics.
