The men's 200 metre breaststroke was a swimming event held as part of the swimming at the 1920 Summer Olympics programme. It was the third appearance of the event. A total of 24 swimmers from 11 nations competed in the event, which was held from Thursday, August 26 to Sunday, August 29, 1920. Mike McDermott (athlete)
Michael James McDermott (January 18, 1893 – October 19, 1970) was an American breaststroke swimmer and water polo player who competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics and in the 1920 Summer Olympics. He was born and died in Chicago, Illinois. In 1912 he was disqualified in the 200-meter breaststroke event as well as in the 400-meter breaststroke competition. Eight years later he was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 200-meter breaststroke event as well as in the semi-finals of the 400-meter breaststroke competition. At the 1920 Games he was also part of the American water polo team which finished fourth in the Olympic tournament. He played in two matches. McDermott was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an "Honor Swimmer" in 1969. Sidney Gooday
Sydney Howard Gooday (4 September 1887 – 18 July 1964) represented Great Britain at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, swimming the men's 200-metre breaststroke. Gooday finished third in his first round heat and did not advance. By the time of the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Gooday was residing in Canada. Decades after the Stockholm games during newspaper coverage of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Ottawa journalists stated that Gooday had been the first Ottawa resident to win an Olympic event. Allegedly, Gooday won the 100-metre breaststroke in 1912. However, there is no confirmation of Gooday at the 1912 Olympics.
