Swimmer (ballet)
''Swimmer'' is a ballet choreographed by Yuri Possokhov, to commissioned music by Shinji Eshima, along with music by Kathleen Brennan, Gavin Bryars and Tom Waits. The ballet is inspired by the short story of the same name by John Cheever. The ballet was created for the San Francisco Ballet premiered on April 10, 2015 at the War Memorial Opera House. Synopsis After attending a party, an unnamed man decide to go home by swimming in various pools, only to discover his home is gone. At the end of the ballet, a projection shows a man in the ocean. Shinji Eshima
Shinji Takane Eshima (born August 4, 1956) is a Japanese-American musician, composer, and teacher. Early life On August 4, 1956, Eshima was born in Berkeley, California. As a child, Eshima took piano lessons. At nine years old, Eshima won the Junior Bach Festival. As a bassist, he was primarily self-taught for the first three years of learning the instrument, but he was inspired by violinist and educator Anne Crowden, his first music teacher for bass. He played in the Berkeley Youth Orchestra and the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra (OSYO) from 1972 to 1974; the latter group, led by Maestro Denis de Coteau, performed on tour in Berlin. Martin Eden
''Martin Eden'' is a 1909 novel by American author Jack London about a young proletarian autodidact struggling to become a writer. It was first serialized in ''The Pacific Monthly'' magazine from September 1908 to September 1909 and then published in book form by Macmillan in September 1909. Eden represents writers' frustration with publishers. The central theme of Eden's developing artistic sensibilities places the novel in the tradition of the ''Künstlerroman'', which narrates an artist's formation and development. Eden differs from London in rejecting socialism, attacking it as " slave morality" and relying on Nietzschean individualism. Yuan Yuan Tan (; born February 14, 1976) is a Chinese ballet dancer who is principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet. Biography She entered Shanghai Dance School at the age of 11. Maria Olegovna Kochetkova (russian: Мария Олеговна Кочеткова; born 1984) is a Russian ballet dancer. She was a principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet between 2007 and 2018, and with the American Ballet Theatre between 2015 and 2017. After that, she became a freelance dancer for several years, before joining the Finnish National Ballet in the 2020/21 season. Early life Kochetkova was born in Moscow. Mike Nichols (born Michael Igor Peschkowsky; November 6, 1931 – November 19, 2014) was an American film and theater director, producer, actor, and comedian. ''Nighthawks'' is a 1942 oil on canvas painting by Edward Hopper that portrays four people in a downtown diner late at night as viewed through the diner's large glass window. The light coming from the diner illuminates a darkened and deserted urban streetscape. The bartender may be a soda jerker, the three guests are night owls, giving the painting the title. It has been described as Hopper's best-known work and is one of the most recognizable paintings in American art. Edward Hopper (July 22, 1882 – May 15, 1967) was an American realist painter and printmaker. While he is widely known for his oil paintings, he was equally proficient as a watercolorist and printmaker in etching.
