Swapnote
''Swapnote'', known as ''Nintendo Letter Box'' in PAL regions and in Japan, is a messaging application for the Nintendo 3DS family. ''Swapnote'' was released on December 21, 2011, in Japan and December 22, 2011, in Europe, Australia and North America via the Nintendo eShop. It can be downloaded at no additional cost and is pre-installed on newer systems. ''Swapnote'' is the successor to the PictoChat app for the Nintendo DS line. In November 2016, Nintendo released a successor called ''Swapdoodle''. Features ''Swapnote'' allows users to send hand-written/drawn messages to either registered friends online via SpotPass and StreetPass, SpotPass or other users locally via SpotPass and StreetPass, StreetPass. Nintendo Network
The Nintendo Network is Nintendo's online service which provides online functionality for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems and their compatible games. Announced on January 26, 2012 at an investors' conference, it is Nintendo's second online service after Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Former president of Nintendo Satoru Iwata said, "Unlike Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which has been focused upon specific functionalities and concepts, we are aiming to establish a platform where various services available through the network for our consumers shall be connected via Nintendo Network service so that the company can make comprehensive proposals to consumers." Ever since the introduction of the Nintendo DS in 2004, which is Nintendo's first gaming console to have wireless communication as a standard, Nintendo has introduced a variety of instant messaging applications to suit each gaming console they have released ever since. The following is a list of the messaging applications which were developed for Nintendo's consoles. PictoChat is a communication utility that comes pre-installed on the Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo DSi consoles. Up to sixteen people can paint and/or text chat with each other using it, connected wirelessly through a LAN-only, system-to-system wireless connection. Nintendo System Development
