Svenska Fruntimmersskolan I Helsingfors
Svenska fruntimmersskolan i Helsingfors ('Swedish Women's School of Helsinki') or only Svenska fruntimmersskolan ('Swedish Women's School') was a Girls' School in Helsinki in Finland, active from 1844 to 1974. Alongside its equivalent in Åbo ( fi, Turku), '' Svenska fruntimmersskolan i Åbo'' (1844–1955), it was the first state school for females in Finland. It allowed pupils of both genders in 1929, and was dissolved in 1974. History The sister schools of Åbo and Helsinki were founded as a result of a debate about women's education in Finland. Already in 1793, Jakob Tengström in '' Åbo Tidningar'' had criticized the schools for girls in Finland for being shallow and useless, and called for them to be given a more useful education. Gunnar Marklund
Gunnar Marklund (5 June 1892 in Helsinki – 23 July 1964 also in Helsinki) was a Finnish botanist (taraxacologist and ranunculologist). Biography Between 1920 and 1941 he worked as a teacher. In 1937 he received his Ph.D. From 1941 to 1959 he was the curator of the Botanical Museum of the University of Helsinki. In 1963, on the occasion of his seventieth birthday, the 38th volume of the ''Memoranda Societatis pro Fauna et Flora Fennica'' was dedicated to him. Scientific work Overview Gunnar Marklund specialised in two difficult apomictic groups, the genus ''Taraxacum'' ( dandelions) and the ''Ranunculus auricomus'' group ( goldilock buttercups). Maria Wiik
Maria Catharina Wiik (3 August 1853 – 19 June 1928) was a Finnish painter. She worked principally with still life, genre images, landscape paintings and portraits. Biography Wiik was born in Helsinki. She was the daughter of architect Erik Johan Wik (or Wiik) (1804–1876) and his wife Gustava Fredrika Meyer. She was born and grew up in Brunnsparken and attended the Swedish language school Svenska fruntimmersskolan in Helsingfors. She then studied drawing with art professor Adolf von Becker. Encouraged by her family, she studied art during 1874–1875 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. In 1875, she continued her art studies in Paris under Tony Robert-Fleury at the Académie Julian, one of the few private schools accepting women at the time. Ellen Thesleff
Ellen Thesleff (5 October 1869 – 12 January 1954) was an expressionist Finnish painter, regarded as one of the leading Finnish modernist painters. Thesleff was born in Helsinki, the eldest daughter of five siblings and her father was an amateur painter. She took private lessons and then, in 1887, studied for two years at the Finnish Art Society Drawing School (now known as the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts) with Gunnar Berndtson. In 1891, Thesleff moved to Paris and enrolled into Académie Colarossi. Thesleff spent all of her life in Finland, France, and Italy, visiting Italy first in 1894. In Finland, she had a family estate at Murole, Ruovesi. She never married. Thesleff took part in many big exhibitions in the 20th century, in particular, in 1949 her paintings were on display on a big exhibition of Nordic art in Copenhagen and were praised by media.
