Sutton-in-Ashfield railway station, sometimes referred to as "Sutton Town" or "Sutton-in-Ashfield General", was a station on a short branch line from Sutton Junction railway station, Sutton Junction in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England. It was opened in 1892, and was located off Station Road. The station was located much closer to Sutton-in-Ashfield town centre than its neighbouring Midland stations. The Sutton-in-Ashfield Town railway station, Great Northern railway station was located nearby. History Opened by the Midland Railway, it became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway during the Railways Act 1921, Grouping of 1923. The station then passed on to the London Midland Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948, and was in use until 1956. Sutton-in-Ashfield is a market town in Nottinghamshire, England, with a population of 48,527 in 2019. Midland Railway
The Midland Railway (MR) was a railway company in the United Kingdom from 1844. The Midland was one of the largest railway companies in Britain in the early 20th century, and the largest employer in Derby, where it had its headquarters. It amalgamated with several other railways to create the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at grouping in 1922. The Midland had a large network of lines emanating from Derby, stretching to London St Pancras, Manchester, Carlisle, Birmingham, and the South West. Sutton Junction railway station was a station in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England. It was opened in 1850, and was located on the Midland Railway's Mansfield Branch Line (Now the Robin Hood Line). It was one of four stations that served the town. The others were Sutton-in-Ashfield Central, Sutton-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield Town. The station was replaced by the modern-day station on the same line and now known as "Sutton Parkway". Sutton-in-Ashfield Town railway station or simply "Sutton Town" railway station served the market town of Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire in England. Context The station was built by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) as part of their Leen Valley Extension which enabled trains to run from Nottingham Victoria to Shirebrook North via Sutton-in-Ashfield Town, Skegby, Pleasley East and Shirebrook South. History The Leen Valley Extension started at Kirkby South Junction where it left the Great Central Main Line. London Midland Region Of British Railways
The London Midland Region (LMR) was one of the six regions created on the formation of the nationalised British Railways (BR), and initially consisted of ex-London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) lines in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Mansfield Railway
The Mansfield Railway was an eleven-mile railway line in Nottinghamshire, England. It was built to serve collieries opening in the coalfield around Mansfield, and ran between junctions at Clipstone and Kirkby-in-Ashfield on the Great Central Railway. It opened in 1916 and was worked by the GCR. Passenger stations were opened on the line, although, at the date of opening, road bus competition was already dominant. The passenger service was withdrawn in 1956 and the line closed in stages as collieries ceased work, completely ending operation in 2003.
