Suspended Member Federation At The World Aquatics Championships
During the FINA World Aquatics Championships, athletes whose governing body have been suspended are still allowed to compete under the FINA flag with the "country" designation as "Suspended Member Federation". In 2015 the Sri Lankan federation was suspended, but they competed as independent athletes under the FINA code. Since 2017 Kuwait and Kenya have sent participants to the Aquatics Championships under the SMF code. 2017 World Aquatics Championships Due to the suspension of the Kuwait Swimming Association, Kuwaiti athletes participated as independent athletes at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships. The competition took place in Budapest, Hungary from 14 July to 30 July. The FINA World Championships or World Aquatics Championships are the World Championships for aquatics sports: Swimming (sport), swimming, Diving (sport), diving, high diving, open water swimming, artistic swimming, and water polo. They are run by FINA, and all swimming events are contested in a Olympic-size swimming pool, long course (50-metre) pool. The event was first held in 1973 World Aquatics Championships, 1973 in Belgrade, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Yugoslavia, and is now held every two years. 2022 World Aquatics Championships
The 2022 World Aquatics Championships, the 19th edition of the FINA World Aquatics Championships, were held in Budapest, Hungary, from 17 June to 3 July 2022. In March 2022, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, FINA banned both the Russian and Belarusian nationals from entering the championships. Host selection Originally, Budapest was selected to host the 2021 World Aquatics Championships. However, after Guadalajara, Mexico, pulled out from the organization of the 2017 Championships, the city took the responsibility for hosting the event, since the infrastructure was already fully ready. Consequently, the application process for the 2021 edition was reopened and the event was relocated to Fukuoka, Japan, and was scheduled to be held between 16 July to August 1, 2021. FINA Athletes At The World Aquatics Championships
Independent athletes have competed at the FINA World Aquatics Championships since 2015, either due to suspension of their governing body or as refugees. 2015 World Aquatics Championships At the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, Sri Lanka's national federation was suspended from recognition and therefore not allowed to be represented at the championships. Consequently, athletes from Sri Lanka swam under a "FINA" banner at the championships as independent athletes. The 2015 World Championships were 24 July to 9 August 2015 in Kazan, Russia.
