Susan Ackerman (biblical Scholar)
Susan Ackerman (born September 24, 1958) is an American Hebrew Bible scholar. She is Preston H. Kelsey Professor of Religion, Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College, where she has taught since 1990. Before coming to Dartmouth she taught at the University of Arizona and Winthrop College in South Carolina. She specializes in the religion of ancient Israel and the religions of Israel's neighbors (Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Canaan), especially women's religious history. Female (symbol: ♀) is the sex of an organism that produces the large non-motile ova (egg cells), the type of gamete (sex cell) that fuses with the male gamete during sexual reproduction. A female has larger gametes than a male. Females and males are results of the anisogamous reproduction system, wherein gametes are of different sizes, unlike isogamy where they are the same size. The exact mechanism of female gamete evolution remains unknown. In species that have males and females, sex-determination may be based on either sex chromosomes, or environmental conditions.
