Necromancy () is the practice of magic or black magic involving communication with the dead by summoning their spirits as apparitions or visions, or by resurrection for the purpose of divination; imparting the means to foretell future events; discovery of hidden knowledge; returning a person to life, or to use the dead as a weapon. In ancient Rome, an ''apparitor'' (also spelled apparator in English, or shortened to paritor) was a civil servant whose salary was paid from the public treasury. The ''apparitores'' assisted the magistrates. There were four occupational grades (''decuriae'') among them. The highest-ranked were the ''scribae'', the clerks or public notaries, followed by the ''lictores'', lictors; ''viatores'', messengers or summoners, that is, agents on official errands; and ''praecones'', announcers or heralds. The Summoner, sometimes called a fetch, is a position in many traditional Wiccan covens. The primary, or at least most evident, function of the summoner is to call other coven members to a meeting or ritual A ritual is a sequence of activities involving gestures, words, actions, or objects, performed according to a set sequence. Rituals may be prescribed by the traditions of a community, including a religious community. Rituals are characterized .... The Summoner's Tale
"The Summoner's Tale" is one of ''The Canterbury Tales'' by Geoffrey Chaucer. The tale is a fierce counterpunch to the preceding tale by The Friar, who had delivered an attack on summoners. Summoners were officials in ecclesiastical courts who delivered a summons to people who had been brought up on various charges; the office was prone to corruption, since summoners were infamous for threatening to bring people up on charges unless they were bought off. The Friar had accused them of corruption and taking bribes and the Summoner seeks to address the Friar through his own story. Sources There are in fact several tales which the Summoner tells and all of them directed at friars. Summoner (foaled 2 March 1997) was a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse best known for his upset win in the 2001 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. In his early career the horse showed good, but unexceptional form, winning four races but looking to be overmatched when tried against top class opposition. In the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes he was employed as a pacemaker but after he established a big lead his more fancied opponents were unable to catch him and he won at odds of 33/1. He later raced with little success in the United Arab Emirates and was gelded at the end of his racing career.
