Sudarshan Kumar Birla or S. K. Birla (born 1934) is an Industrialist, and a senior member of Birla family. He heads the S. K. Birla group, which once consisted of several companies like DIGJAM, Digvijay Woolen Mills, Mysore Cement, Birla Eastern, Nabin Industries, Xpro India. He is son of Lakshmi Niwas Birla and eldest grandson of G. D. Birla Ghanshyam Das Birla (10 April 1894 – 11 June 1983) was an Indian businessman and member of the Birla Family. The Birla family is a family connected with the industrial and social history of India. Foundations The Birla family origins lie with the Maheshwari caste of Bania Vaishya traders but they were outcast from their traditional community in 1922 when one of their member, Rameshwar Das Birla, was thought to have broken the caste marriage rules. They are Marwari and by convention merchants from Rajasthan are termed Marwari. The family originates from the town of Pilani in the Shekhawati region in North-east Rajasthan. They still maintain their residence in Pilani and run several educational institutions there, including the BITS, Pilani. Mysore Cements Limited (also known as Diamond Cement) is one of major producers of Cement in south India since its establishment in 1958 – 59 by Karnataka-based industrialist Sarangapani Mudaliar and by collaboration of Kaisers USA as a Public Limited Company The company produced its major output of 1 ton cement with the investment of about 20 million Rupees, in 1962. MCL was immediately taken over by Kaisers and G.D Birla and from then the following years company started producing more cement and it was 4 tpa by the end of year 1968. With an investment of 23 million, MCL produced 6 tpa of cement in Ammasandra unit Based in Tumkur District of Karnataka State. Lakshmi Niwas Birla (11 July 1909 - 29 August 1994) was one of the scions of Birla family and a noted Industrialist , philanthropist , writer and art connoisseur. He was the eldest son of Ghanshyam Das Birla and his first wife Durgadevi. He was later adopted by Jugal Kishore Birla. He later married to Sushila Devi and had one son Sudarshan Kumar Birla from marriage born in 1934. He served as president of Indian Chamber of Commerce in 1951 and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry for year 1967. He wrote many books in English and Hindi and was also noted art connoisseur. He donated monies to build Hindu temples.
