Stuart & Sons is an Australian manufacturer of handcrafted grand pianos. The company is based in Tumut in New South Wales. History The company was established by Wayne Stuart in 1990 as ''Stuart & Sons Terra Australis Pty Limited.'' The company later evolved and formed a partnership with Albert Music. The company used to be based in Newcastle and in 2015, relocated to Tumut at the base of the Snowy Mountains. Pianos Stuart & Sons uses Australian timbers for construction. The Dutch-Australian pianist Gerard Willems used a Stuart & Sons piano when recording the complete piano sonata cycle of Ludwig van Beethoven during 1999 and 2000. Stuart & Sons created a grand piano with 14 more keys than are found on a standard piano, for a total of 102 keys or eight and one half octaves. A model with 20 extra keys was built in 2018. Tumut
Tumut () is a town in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia, situated on the banks of the Tumut River. Tumut sits on the north-west foothills of the Snowy Mountains and is located on the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri, Wolgalu and Ngunnawal Aboriginal peoples. Tumut is often referred to as the 'gateway to the snowy' Snowy Mountains Scheme. The former Tumut Shire was administered from offices located in the town. Tumut is approximately south-west of Sydney and north-east of Melbourne. Wertheim is an Australian brand of pianos, formerly produced in Richmond, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Around 18,000 upright pianos were made in Melbourne between 1908 and 1935. They were designed for the south-eastern Australian climate and were a popular all-purpose piano. They were used in a range of settings such as schools and public halls, as they were renowned for their ability to stay in tune for prolonged periods of time, requiring little maintenance. They were also used by piano teachers and for professional live performance, the most famous of which was for performances by Dame Nellie Melba, who frequently requested that Wertheim Pianos be used during her performances. The business was very successful and the Wertheim family achieved celebrity status in Australia during the 1920s.
