A fortified house or fortified mansion is a type of building which developed in Europe during the Middle Ages, generally with significant fortifications added. United States In the United States, historically a fortified house was often called a fort or station depending on the region. This was a building built for defense against primarily Indian attacks in frontier areas. While some fortified houses were sometimes used by militias, state and federal military units, their primary purpose was for private or civilian defense. Sometimes a stockade would surround the building(s). Jedediah Strong House
Jedediah Strong House is a historic home at Colonie in Albany County, New York. Built about 1795, it is a two-story, six bay wide dwelling with two symmetrically placed end chimneys in the Federal style. Samuel Paddock Strong House
The Samuel Paddock Strong House is a historic house at 94 West Main Street in Vergennes, Vermont. Built in the 1830s for a prominent local businessman, it is a well-preserved example of Greek Revival architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It now houses the Strong House Inn. Description and history The Strong House is located southwest of downtown Vergennes, on the northwest side of West Main Street (Vermont Route 22A). It consists of a -story main block, covered by a front-facing gabled roof, with integral flanking side-gable single-story ells. It is a wood-frame structure, with clapboard siding and a stone foundation. The building corners are pilastered, with a dentillated entablature encircling the main block, and a pedimented gable with triangular fan window at its center. Jedediah Strong II House
The Jedediah Strong II House is a historic house at the junction of Quechee Main Street and Dewey's Mill Road in Hartford, Vermont. Built in 1815 by a local mill owner, it is a fine local example of a high-style Federal period brick house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It now houses professional offices. Description and history The Strong House stands in what is now a relatively rural area east of the village of Quechee, at the southwest corner of Quechee Main Street and Deweys Mills Road. It is a -story brick building, with a gabled roof and stone foundation. A period -story brick ell extends to the rear (south), to which a modern wood-frame ell has been attached.
