Store Strandstræde
Store Strandstræde (literally "Great Beach Alley") is a street in Copenhagen, Denmark. It extends diagonally from Kongens Nytorv, at the corner of Nyhavn and Bredgade, to Sankt Annæ Plads. Lille Strandstræde ("Small Beach Alley") joins the street shortly before reaching Sankt Annæ Plads. Nordic Council is headquartered at No. 18 and operates an art gallery featuring Nordic countries, Nordic art and artists at the ground floor. History Store Strandgade is the last remains of a small road which ran along the coast line, connecting the old Eastern City Gate to Sankt Annæ Bro (English: Saint Ann's Bridge) where the Nordre Toldbod#The Custom House, Custom House was built in 1628. Nordre Toldbod
Nordre Toldbod is a waterfront area in Copenhagen, Denmark, located at the north end of Larsens Plads and just south of Kastellet. It takes its name after the custom house or ''toldbod'' which used to be located in the area. Most of the historic buildings in the area were torn down in 1973 when the site was redeveloped but its central waterfront space has remained intact and features a number of structures which bear testament to its former use. Among the modern buildings in the area are the headquarters of Mærsk and the Danish Energy Agency. The area is adjacent to Churchill and Langelinie Parks. Garnison Church, Copenhagen The Garnison Church () is a church at Sankt Annæ Plads in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Baroque church was erected as a church primarily intended for military personnel stationed in the city. History In the 17th century, Copenhagen had become home to a sizeable garrison. A military church was built at Kastellet in 1670, but its modest size only allowed it to serve the personnel at the fortress. The rest of the troops in the city had to use Church of Holmen, a former anchor forge which had been converted into a naval church in 1619. When Sophie Amalienborg burned down in 1689, its chapel survived the flames and was subsequently put at the disposal of the Army. However, the small building which had been built for members of the royal court only served as a temporary solution. Aage Langeland-Mathiesen
Aage Langeland-Mathiesen (22 May 1868 – 19 June 1933) was a Danish architect. He was active both in building design and restoration, and was associated with the National Museum for many years. His building designs are strongly influenced by his interest in historic architecture. He collaborated with his more well-known colleague Ulrik Plesner on many projects. Early life and education Mathiesen was born in Aarhus but the family moved to Copenhagen in 1872 where his father Rasmus Langeland Mathiesen became building inspector of the Danish capital. Aage Langeland-Mathiesen completed a carpenter's apprenticeship and studied at Copenhagen Technical College before enrolling at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1884. He became an executing architect at Hermann Baagøe Storck prior to his graduation in January 1895. Store Strandstræde 19–21
Store Strandstræde 19–21 is a listed mixed-use property from 1908 in Store Strandstræde in central Copenhagen, Denmark. The complex contains commercial space in the two lower floors and large, high-end apartments on the three upper floors and also comprises a workshop building in the courtyard. It is designed in a style which combines Romantic Nationalism with influences from Jugendstil. It is located next to the Garrison Church. History Store Strandstræde 19–21 was built by the consortium "Hallandshus" in connection with an expansion of part of Store Strandstræde at no cost for the city. The expansion of the street to a width of 20 Danish alls was adopted by the city council in 1906. The Empire style (, ''style Empire'') is an early-nineteenth-century design movement in architecture, furniture, other decorative arts, and the visual arts, representing the second phase of Neoclassicism. It flourished between 1800 and 1815 during the Consulate and the First French Empire periods, although its life span lasted until the late-1820s. Grandjean House
The Grandjean House () is a Neoclassical architecture, Late Neoclassical property consisting of two separate buildings, one at Bredgade 4 and one at Store Strandstræde 3, on opposite sides of a central courtyard, in central Copenhagen, Denmark. The property is separated from Kongens Nytorv by a small building that now houses House of Amber, Copenhagen Amber Museum. It was built in 1854 by the architect Christian Tybjerg for pastry chef Christian Bredo Grandjean. It replaced an older building, which was known as the Collin House after Hans Christian Andersen patron Jonas Collin, but this name is now associated with another building in Amaliegade.
