Stony Brook Seawolves Football
The Stony Brook Seawolves football program is the collegiate football team that represents Stony Brook University at the NCAA Division I level. The program participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision and currently competes in CAA Football, the technically separate football league operated by the all-sports Colonial Athletic Association. The program plays its home games at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, New York. Stony Brook first fielded a varsity team at the Division III level in 1984 and rose to Division II in 1996. In 1999, the Seawolves became a Division I program, joining the Northeast Conference without offering scholarships until 2006. After a year of FCS independence, Stony Brook joined the Big South Conference and fully transitioned into a 63-scholarship program. Chuck Priore
Chuck Priore (born February 17, 1960) is an American football coach and former player. He is the current head football coach at Stony Brook University, a position he has held since the 2006 season. Priore served the head football coach at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut from 2000 to 2005. He was also the head men's lacrosse coach at the University at Albany in 1986 and at Union College in Schenectady, New York from 1988 to 1991. Priore's coaching style is known for his run-heavy offense and aggressive defense. Playing career Priore played football at the University at Albany before graduating in 1982. He was the starting fullback for three seasons and was named team captain before his senior year. In 1982, he won the Spud Kruzan Award, given to Albany's most outstanding athlete. 1999 Stony Brook Seawolves Football Team
Sam Kornhauser was the first coach of the Stony Brook Seawolves football program which represented Stony Brook University in the NCAA at the Division III, II, and I level. He was with the Seawolves from the first season in program history in 1984 (Division III) and successfully transitioned the Seawolves to Division I in the 1990s and early 2000s and joined the Northeast Conference offering scholarships in the football program for the first time. While at Stony Brook he led the Seawolves to moderate success sharing a Northeast championship in 2005. Eastern Football Conference (1997–2000)
The Eastern Football Conference (EFC) was an NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletic football conference that existed from 1997 to 2000 and was composed of member schools from the Northeastern United States. During its entire existence, its membership was geographically divided into two separate divisions: the Atlantic Division and the Bay State/Central Division (its name was changed after the 1998 season). NCAA Division II
NCAA Division II (D-II) is an intermediate-level division of competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). It offers an alternative to both the larger and better-funded Division I and to the scholarship-free environment offered in Division III. Before 1973, the NCAA's smaller schools were grouped together in the College Division. In 1973, the College Division split in two when the NCAA began using numeric designations for its competitions. The Freedom Football Conference (FFC) was a college athletic conference that competed in the NCAA's Division III. Member teams were located in New England and New York. NCAA Division III
NCAA Division III (D-III) is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States. D-III consists of athletic programs at colleges and universities that choose not to offer athletic scholarships to their student-athletes. The NCAA's first split was into two divisions, the University and College Divisions, in 1956, the College Division was formed for smaller schools that did not have the resources of the major athletic programs across the country. The College Division split again in 1973 when the NCAA went to its current naming convention: Division I, Division II, and Division III. Division III schools are not allowed to offer athletic scholarships, while D-II schools can. Will Tye
Wilhelm Tye (born November 4, 1991) is a former American football tight end. He played college football at Florida State Seminoles football, Florida State and Stony Brook Seawolves football, Stony Brook, and signed with the New York Giants in 2015 as an undrafted free agent. Tye was the first player from Stony Brook to reach the NFL and played two seasons for the Giants. High school career Originally from Middletown, Connecticut, Tye was a standout tight end/kick returner at Xavier High School (Connecticut) in Middletown.
