McConnell, West Virginia
McConnell is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Logan County, West Virginia, United States, on the Guyandotte River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 514. It was established in 1933. The community was named after one Mr. McConnell, a railroad promoter. Geography McConnell is in central Logan County, on the east side of the Guyandotte River, a north-flowing tributary of the Ohio River. The CDP is bordered to the north by Stollings. Hanging Rock Highway, former West Virginia Route 10, is the main road through the community, leading northwest (downriver) to Logan, the county seat, and southeast (upriver) to Man. West Virginia Route 17 is a north-south state highway located in the southern portion of the U.S. state of West Virginia. The southern terminus of the route is at West Virginia Route 10 in Stollings a short distance east of Logan. The northern terminus is at West Virginia Route 85 in Madison. History The current alignment of WV 17 was once part of U.S. Route 119. US 119 was moved off of this routing when Corridor G was complete from Chapmanville to Danville by 1976. West Virginia Route 10
West Virginia Route 10 is a north–south route from Cabell County to Mercer County in the western and southern regions of West Virginia. Mostly a two-lane, winding highway with no shoulders, Route 10 is considered to be one of substandard design when compared to modern standards. Nevertheless, it serves as a major arterial highway in the state, carrying a substantial amount of traffic volume. Tractor-trailers have a particularly difficult time negotiating many of the route's sharp, hairpin curves. Between the towns of West Hamlin and Man, most of the route closely parallels the course of the Guyandotte River. Thus, it follows a very winding course, with a solid rocks just inches from the roadway, and is thus very dangerous. Guyandotte River
The Guyandotte River is a tributary of the Ohio River, approximately 166 mi (267 km) long, in southwestern West Virginia in the United States. It was named after the French term for the Wendat Native Americans. It drains an area of the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau south of the Ohio between the watersheds of the Kanawha River to the northeast and Twelvepole Creek and the Big Sandy River to the southwest.
