Stewart's College FP
Stewart's College FP RFC was a Scottish rugby union club in Edinburgh. Founded The club was founded in 1875, when a match took place between the former pupils of Daniel Stewart's Hospital and George Watson's College. In 1887, the club became a member of the Scottish Rugby Union. They played at Inverleith Sports Ground, the venue for Scotland's home games between 1899 and 1925, during which time the first match against New Zealand was played. Inverleith still boasts some of the best playing facilities in Edinburgh. Merger Daniel Stewart's College merged with Melville's College in 1973. The college's former pupil rugby clubs - Stewart's College FP and Melville College FP - also merged at this time to found a new rugby club: Stewart's Melville FP. Scottish Rugby Union
The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU; gd, Aonadh Rugbaidh na h-Alba) is the governing body of rugby union in Scotland. Styled as Scottish Rugby, it is the second oldest Rugby Union, having been founded in 1873. Finlay Kennedy
Finlay Kennedy (23 January 1892 – 8 March 1925) was a Scotland national rugby union team, Scotland international rugby union footballer. He played as a Prop (rugby union), Prop. Rugby Union career Amateur career Kennedy played for Stewart's College FP. He captained the side for season 1913–14. Provincial career Kennedy played in the inter-City match between Glasgow District (rugby union), Glasgow District and Edinburgh District (rugby union), Edinburgh District on 3 December 1910. Edinburgh ran out victors with a 26 - 5 scoreline. International career Kennedy was capped for Scotland national rugby union team, Scotland 5 times, all after the First World War. Jed-Forest Sevens
Jed-Forest Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Jed-Forest RFC, in Jedburgh, Scotland. The Jed-Forest Sevens was the fourth of the Border Sevens tournaments to be instated, in 1894, after the Melrose Sevens (1883), Gala Sevens (1884) and the Hawick Sevens (1885). The Jed-Forest Sevens are traditionally the last tournament of the Kings of the Sevens competition. 2022's Jed-Forest Sevens will be played on 14 May. Gala Sevens
Gala Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Gala RFC, in Galashiels, Scotland. The Gala Sevens was the second of the Border Sevens tournaments to be instated in 1884, just behind the Melrose Sevens in 1883. Held around the start of every April, the tournament is part of the Kings of the Sevens competition. 2019's Gala Sevens took place on the 6 April. It was won by Edinburgh Academicals. Sports Day Gala introduced a Sports Day in 1884. This contained rugby sevens, a kicking competition and athletics. Memorial Football trophy The winner of the Gala Sevens receives the Border Memorial Football Trophy. Invited Sides Various sides have been invited to play in the Gala Sevens tournament throughout the years. The Barbarians entered in a side in 1976, as did Harlequins. Hawick Sevens
Hawick Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Hawick RFC, in Hawick, Scotland. The Hawick Sevens tournament started in 1886 and is the third extant oldest Sevens tournament in the world; behind Melrose Sevens (1883) and Gala Sevens (1884). Usually held around the end of every April, the tournament is part of the Kings of the Sevens competition. 2019's Hawick Sevens took place on the 20 April. The final was won by Boroughmuir. For the 2019–20 season the tournament will instead move to an August fixture. This was played on 10 August 2019. No tournament was held for 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 2021–22 season event was won by Melrose. The disassociated Hawick & Wilton Sevens started in 1885. These were run by Hawick and Wilton RFC - a cricket club that branched out to rugby union and was the progenitor of the Hawick RFC club - on separate dates from the Hawick Sevens tournament. Langholm Sevens
Langholm Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Langholm RFC, in Langholm, Scotland. The Langholm Sevens was the last of the Border Sevens tournaments to be instated in 1908. Held around the end of every April, the tournament is part of the Kings of the Sevens competition. 2019's Langholm Sevens took place on 27 April. Sports Day Langholm first introduced a Sports Day - as it was originally called - on 16 October 1886; and rugby union seven a sides were played then. Two local teams met; from the firms of James Scott and Sons of Waverley Mills and Hotson the Builders. James Scott and Sons won the match. However it wasn't until 1908 that Langholm RFC decided that they should hold an annual Sports Day and thus the Sevens tournament today dates from then. Melrose Sevens
Melrose Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Melrose Rugby Club, at The Greenyards in Melrose, Scotland. It is the oldest rugby sevens competition in the world, dating back to 1883 when the tournament was suggested by former Melrose player Ned Haig. English side London Scottish are the current champions after beating Edinburgh Accies 29–12 in the 2019 final to win the event for the first time since 1965. History Held every April, the tournament is part of the Kings of the Sevens competition, and has attracted teams from as far afield as Japan, Hong Kong, Uruguay and South Africa. From 2018 the playing time in the final was cut from twenty minutes to fourteen minutes which is in line with the standard match time. In September 2019 the organisers had set out plans for the Melrose Sevens to relaunch as a four-day festival of music and rugby. Lex Govan
Lex Govan (1914 - July 1996) was a Scottish rugby union player. He was the 92nd President of the Scottish Rugby Union. Rugby Union career Amateur career He played rugby union and cricket for Daniel Stewart's College. On leaving school he played for Stewart's College FP, playing in the 1st XV at the age of 17. He was one of the side that won the 1937-38 Scottish Unofficial Championship; the first championship title in the club's history. During the Second World War he joined the Royal Scots but he was back at Stewart's College FP in 1946 and the club won another championship title. Provincial career Govan played for the Scotland Probables in the 1934-35 season. He was never selected for Scotland; the closest he came was being the reserve hooker in the 1946-47 season. Edinburgh District (rugby Union)
Edinburgh District was a select provincial amateur rugby union team that drew its players mainly from the Edinburgh area, as well as others from the rest of east central Scotland; roughly corresponding to the old Lothian regional council area. Historically the Edinburgh District team played matches against touring teams visiting Scotland from abroad, and also competed in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. The Edinburgh District rugby union team was founded in 1872. The team played the world's first inter-district match that year against Glasgow District rugby union team. The amateur Edinburgh District side evolved into the professional Edinburgh Rugby side in 1996; one year after rugby union allowed professionalism in 1995.
