Steve Owen (American Football)
Stephen Joseph Owen (April 21, 1898 – May 17, 1964) was an American football player and coach. He earned a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as head coach of the National Football League's New York Giants for 24 seasons, from 1930 to 1953. Owen's skill at designing defenses, his fundamentals-centered approach to the game and his innovative " A formation," a variation on the single-wing, also helped his offenses thrive and were key to his success. Tackle is a playing position in gridiron football. Historically, in the one-platoon system prevalent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a tackle played on both offense and defense. In the modern system of specialized units, offensive tackle and defensive tackle are separate positions, and the stand-alone term "tackle" refers to the offensive tackle position only. 1927 NFL Season
The 1927 NFL season was the eighth regular season of the National Football League. Prior to the season, the league decided to eliminate the financially weaker teams. As a result, the league dropped from 22 to 12 teams. The league absorbed many players and one franchise (the New York Yankees) from the defunct American Football League. Wilfrid Smith in the ''Chicago Tribune'' wrote that "the reduction formed a more compact circuit and provided better competition." Smith opined that the "outstanding feature" of the 1927 NFL season was the debut of Benny Friedman who became one of the game's "best drawing cards" and proved that professional football could support itself in Cleveland. 1953 New York Giants Season
The New York Giants season was the franchise's 29th season in the National Football League. The Giants were looking to improve on their 7–5 record from the previous season. However, the Giants hit rock bottom in 1953, losing their first three games of the season on their way to a disappointing 3–9 record and in 5th place in their division. The season included a 62–14 loss to the Cleveland Browns, the 62 points being the most points surrendered in franchise history at the time, until it was surpassed by the 1966 team that gave up 72 points to Washington in the highest scoring game in NFL history. The 1938 NFL Championship Game was the sixth championship game played in the National Football League (NFL). It was played on December 11 at the Polo Grounds in New York City, with an attendance of 48,120, a record crowd for a title game. The game matched the New York Giants (8–2–1), champions of the Eastern Division, against the Western Division champion Green Bay Packers (8–3–0).
