Stephen Sewell (lawyer)
Stephen Sewell (May 25, 1770 – June 21, 1832) was a lawyer and political figure in Lower Canada. He was born Stephen Sewall in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1770, the son of Jonathan Sewall who was the attorney general of Massachusetts, and returned to England with his family at the start of the American Revolution, where he attended Bristol Grammar School. In 1787, he travelled to New Brunswick where his brother Jonathan Sewell, Jonathan had already settled; he articled in law there with Ward Chipman and was called to the bar in 1791. Later in 1791, he moved to Montreal, qualified as a lawyer there and set up practice. Sewell served in the local militia, becoming captain in 1812. In 1809, he was named solicitor general for Lower Canada. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada in 1809 for Huntingdon County, Quebec, Huntingdon and was elected for Montreal East in 1810. Stephen John Sewell (born 13 March 1953) is an Australian playwright and screenwriter. Biography Born in Liverpool, New South Wales, Sewell's first theatre experience was in the 1970s in the fringe theatre while he was studying Science at the University of Sydney, where his first play was staged in 1975. In an interview in 2006 Sewell describes himself as an "angry writer" and a workaholic. Fascinated by the social world, his work ranges across many fields of study, from economics and politics to philosophy and psychology, and while he is considered a writer obsessed with dark themes, he is not himself a pessimist, saying, "No artist, no creator, ever sets forth without hope, even if the thing they create appears to be carved out of pitch black despair."
