Stephen Saunders (British Army Officer)
Brigadier Stephen William John Saunders (26 July 1947 – 8 June 2000) was a British Army officer who, while serving as the British military attaché in Athens, was assassinated by members of the Greek urban guerrilla Marxist organization 17 November (17N). Early life and military career Saunders was born in Farnborough, Hampshire, the son of a British Army officer. Educated at Peter Symonds School, Winchester, he joined the British Army in 1965 and was commissioned into the Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment having completed his officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. From October 1968 he spent three years reading for an in-service degree in Geography and Economics at the University of Bristol. On returning to his battalion, he served in Berlin, Cyprus, Northern Ireland and West Germany, before attending the Staff College, Camberley in 1981. Stephen Saunders is a British-born entrepreneur, journalist, and marketing professional. He is the former CEO of Light Reading, a media, communications, and events business, which he founded in 2000, sold to UBM in 2005, and repurchased in 2014. Formerly, he was managing director of UBM DeusM, an integrated marketing services division of UBM, launched in 2010. He has also written and edited guidebooks on data communications and networks. Steve Saunders (born 21 September 1964) is an English former footballer who had a seven-year professional career in the Football League. Playing career As a schoolboy he represented Boteler Grammar School, where he came to the attention of local amateur side Warrington Town. In 1981, he became an apprentice at professional side Bolton Wanderers, before he became a pro with the club in 1983. Trained by coach Walter Joyce, Saunders' career was put in jeopardy when he suffered a double hernia and torn pelvic muscles shortly after turning pro. This limited him to just three league appearances in his only season as a ''Trotter''. Crewe Alexandra manager Dario Gradi signed him, and Saunders went on to score two goals in 25 league and cup appearances for the club.
