Stephen M. White
Stephen Mallory White (January 19, 1853February 21, 1901) was an American attorney and politician from California. A Democratic Party (United States), Democrat, he was most notable for his service as a United States Senate, U.S. Senator from 1893 to 1899. A native of San Francisco, White graduated from Santa Clara University, Santa Clara College in 1874, studied law, and became an attorney in Los Angeles. He became active in politics, and served as Los Angeles County District Attorney (1882-1884) and a member of the California Senate (1887-1891). White was elected the Senate's President pro tempore of the California State Senate, president pro tem, and when the Lieutenant governor of California, lieutenant governor succeeded to the governorship after the incumbent's death, White was acting lieutenant governor for most of his state senate term. Grover Cleveland
Stephen Grover Cleveland (March 18, 1837June 24, 1908) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 22nd and 24th president of the United States from 1885 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897. Cleveland is the only president in American history to serve two non-consecutive terms in office. He won the popular vote for three presidential elections—in 1884, 1888, and 1892—and was one of two Democrats (followed by Woodrow Wilson in 1912) to be elected president during the era of Republican presidential domination dating from 1861 to 1933. The 1888 Democratic National Convention was a nominating convention held June 5 to 7, 1888, in the St. Louis Exposition and Music Hall in St. Louis, Missouri. The Native Sons of the Golden West is a fraternal service organization founded in the U.S. state of California in 1875, dedicated to historic preservation, documentation of historic structures and places in the state, the placement of historic plaques and other charitable functions within California. Reading Law
Reading law was the method used in common law countries, particularly the United States, for people to prepare for and enter the legal profession before the advent of law schools. Stephen Mallory
Stephen Russell Mallory (1812 – November 9, 1873) was a Democratic senator from Florida from 1851 to the secession of his home state and the outbreak of the American Civil War. For much of that period, he was chairman of the Committee on Naval Affairs. It was a time of rapid naval reform, and he insisted that the ships of the US Navy should be as capable as those of Britain and France, the foremost navies in the world at that time. He also wrote a bill and guided it through Congress to provide for compulsory retirement of officers who did not meet the standards of the profession. Although he was not a leader in the secession movement, Mallory followed his state out of the Union.
