Steinmetz Curve
A Steinmetz curve is the curve of intersection of two right circular cylinders of radii a and b, whose axes intersect perpendicularly. In case of a=b the Steimetz curves are the edges of a Steinmetz solid. If the cylinder axes are the x- and y-axes and a\le b, then the Steinmetz curves are given by the parametric equations: : \begin x (t) & = a \cos t \\ y (t) & = \pm \sqrt \\ z (t) & = a \sin t \end It is named after mathematician Charles Proteus Steinmetz, along with Steinmetz's equation, Steinmetz solids, and Steinmetz equivalent circuit theory. Steinmetz Solid
In geometry, a Steinmetz solid is the solid body obtained as the intersection of two or three cylinders of equal radius at right angles. Each of the curves of the intersection of two cylinders is an ellipse. The intersection of two cylinders is called a bicylinder. Topologically, it is equivalent to a square hosohedron. The intersection of three cylinders is called a tricylinder. A bisected bicylinder is called a vault, and a cloister vault in architecture has this shape. Steinmetz solids are named after mathematician Charles Proteus Steinmetz, who solved the problem of determining the volume of the intersection. However, the same problem had been solved earlier, by Archimedes in the ancient Greek world, Zu Chongzhi in ancient China, and Piero della Francesca in the early Italian Renaissance. Charles Proteus Steinmetz
Charles Proteus Steinmetz (born Karl August Rudolph Steinmetz, April 9, 1865 – October 26, 1923) was a German-born American mathematician and electrical engineer and professor at Union College. He fostered the development of alternating current that made possible the expansion of the electric power industry in the United States, formulating mathematical theories for engineers. He made ground-breaking discoveries in the understanding of hysteresis that enabled engineers to design better electromagnetic apparatus equipment, especially electric motors for use in industry. At the time of his death, Steinmetz held over 200 patents. A genius in both mathematics and electronics, he did work that earned him the nicknames "Forger of Thunderbolts" and "The Wizard of Schenectady". Steinmetz's equation, sometimes called the power equation, is an empirical equation used to calculate the total power loss (core losses) per unit volume in magnetic materials when subjected to external sinusoidally varying magnetic flux. The equation is named after Charles Steinmetz, a German-American electrical engineer, who proposed a similar equation without the frequency dependency in 1890.
