Staurothele Elenkinii
''Staurothele elenkinii'' is a species of saxicolous (rock-dwelling) lichen in the family Verrucariaceae. It was described as new to science by Ukrainian lichenologist Alfred Oxner in 1927, from the steppes of Ukraine. In 2013 it was recorded from the northeast Caucasus, in Russia. It is also widespread on dry rocks in the North American west, ranging from the Northwest Territories south to the southwestern United States. It grows on shales, sandstones, and calcareous rocks. Description The thallus of ''Staurothele elenkinii'' is scant, sometimes limited to tiny black verrucules (minute, pimple-like structures) on the rock surface. In other cases, the thallus is apparent as only a paling of the natural rock colour. Perithecia occur singly in the verrucules, measuring up to 0.5 mm in width. Irwin M. Brodo (born 1935) is an emeritus scientist at the Canadian Museum of Nature, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He is an authority on the identification and biology of lichens. Irwin Brodo was honored in 1994 with an Acharius Medal presented to him by the International Association for Lichenology. Brodo did his undergraduate studies at Columbia University, and received a master's degree from Cornell University. He earned a Ph.D. in lichenology under the supervision of Henry Imshaug at Michigan State University. He later went on to teach at Université Laval and the University of Alaska, and he also supervised master's students at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. Verrucariales is an order of ascomycetous fungi within the subclass Chaetothyriomycetidae of the class Eurotiomycetes. Although most of the Verrucariales are lichenised, the family Sarcopyreniaceae consists of 11 species of lichenicolous (lichen-dwelling) fungi. ''Staurothele nemorum'' is a species of saxicolous lichen, saxicolous (rock-dwelling) lichen in the family Verrucariaceae. Found in the United States, it was species description, formally described as a new species in 2019 by Caleb Morse and Douglas Ladd. The type (biology), type specimen was collected from the University of Kansas Ecological Reserves, in Baldwin City (Kansas). The botanical name, species epithet ''nemorum'', which combines the Latin roots ''nemus'' (grove (nature), grove or a glade (geography), glade) and ''-oris'', alludes to the habitat of this lichen. It occurs in the southern Great Plains in central North America, and has been collected in the states of Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas.
