Stauffer (also commonly spelled " Stouffer" and "Stover" in North America) is a German surname, the origin of which derives from the Proto-German word ''staupa'', meaning "steep." ''Staupa'' and its Middle High German descendant, ''stouf'', evolved to mean, among other things, a steep hill or mountain. Many of these hills and mountains serve as the basis for the names of such places as Donaustauf, Hohenstaufen, Staufenberg, Regenstauf, Staufen im Breisgau, and the Staufens of Switzerland and Austria. Rudolph Stauffer
First Sergeant Rudolph Stauffer (November 27, 1836 – June 9, 1918) was a Swiss-born American soldier in the U.S. Army who served with the 5th U.S. Cavalry in the Apache Wars. He was one of twelve soldiers, along with ten Apache Scouts, awarded the Medal of Honor during Lieutenant Colonel George Crook's "winter campaign" of 1872–73, being cited for gallantry in battle against renegade Apaches near Camp Hualpai. Charles King, while serving with the 5th U.S. Cavalry in his youth, wrote of him in his memoirs as "grim old Stauffer, the first sergeant". Nathan Stauffer
Nathan Pennypacker Stauffer (January 1, 1875 – June 5, 1959) was an American college football player and coach and physician. He served as the head football coach at Dickinson College from 1896 to 1899, at Pennsylvania Military College—now known as Widener University—from 1900 to 1901, and at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) from 1909 to 1911, compiling a career college football coaching record of 52–31–5. Stauffer was one of the first head coaches at a small school to be paid for his work. Coaching career Dickinson Stauffer was the first head football coach at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and he held that position for four seasons, from 1896 until 1899. Lieutenant Joseph Emmett Stauffer (October 29, 1874 – April 10, 1917) was a teacher, politician and soldier from Alberta. Early life Stauffer was born October 29, 1874, in Manassas, Virginia, to parents of German-Swiss ancestry. He moved to Canada at a young age with his family, and was educated at Berlin, Ontario. He married Emma Ernst. Stauffer worked as a real estate agent, forest ranger, and Homestead Inspector. Political career Stauffer was elected to the Alberta Legislature in the 1909 Alberta legislature. In that election he defeated incumbent Cornelius Hiebert in a landslide in the new Didsbury district. He was re-elected to a second term in office in the 1913 Alberta legislature, winning with a comfortable but reduced plurality. John Stauffer is Professor of English, American Studies, and African American Studies at Harvard University. He writes and lectures on the Civil War era, antislavery, social protest movements, and photography. Education and career Stauffer received his Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University in 1999, began teaching at Harvard University that year, and was tenured in 2004. John Stauffer (May 28, 1925 – October 26, 2019) was an American businessman and politician from Pennsylvania who served as a Republican member of the Pennsylvania Senate for the 19th district from 1969 to 1988. Early life Stauffer was born in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania and graduated from Phoenixville Area High School. He owned the Stauffer's Mens Store in Phoenixville. Political career He served on the Phoenixville Borough Council and was president of the borough council. He served as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the Chester County district from 1965 to 1966 and the 157th district from 1967 to 1970. Johann Georg Stauffer
Johann Georg Stauffer (also Johann Georg Staufer; born January 26, 1778 in Vienna; died 24 January 1853) was an Austrian luthier and the most important Viennese luthier of his time. Life Stauffer was born in the Viennese suburb of Weißgerber, the son of Mathias Stauffer, a labourer from Weyregg am Attersee. He studied under the luthier Franz Geissenhof. In June 1800 he took the Vienna oath of citizenship and in May 1802 he married Josepha Fischer in the Schottenkirche, Vienna. He took over the workshop of Ignaz Christian Bartl. Initially he built instruments modeled after the Italian guitar masters Giovanni Battista Fabricatore and Gaetano Vinaccia, he then developed several variants, typical of his own guitar style (see section ''Instruments'').
