Union (American Civil War)
During the American Civil War, the Union, also known as the North, referred to the United States led by President Abraham Lincoln. It was opposed by the secessionist Confederate States of America (CSA), informally called "the Confederacy" or "the South". The Union is named after its declared goal of preserving the United States as a constitutional union. "Union" is used in the U.S. Constitution to refer to the founding formation of the people, and to the states in union. In the context of the Civil War, it has also often been used as a synonym for "the northern states loyal to the United States government;" in this meaning, the Union consisted of 20 free states and five border states. The Union Army was a new formation comprising mostly state units, together with units from the regular U.S. Army. The border states were essential as a supply base for the Union invasion of the Confederacy, and Lincoln realized he could not win the war without control of them, especially Maryla ... Order 191
Special Order 191 (series 1862), also known as the "Lost Dispatch" and the "Lost Order", was a general movement order issued by Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee on about September 9, 1862, during the Maryland Campaign of the American Civil War. A lost copy of this order was recovered on September 13 by Union Army troops in Frederick County, Maryland, and the subsequent military intelligence gained by the Union played an important role in the Battle of South Mountain and Battle of Antietam. History Drafting The order was drafted on or about September 9, 1862, during the Maryland Campaign. It gave details of the movements of the Army of Northern Virginia during the early days of its invasion of Maryland. Lee divided his army, which he planned to regroup later; according to the precise text Major General Stonewall Jackson was to move his command to Martinsburg while McLaws's command and Walker's command "endeavored to capture Harpers Ferry." Major General James Longstr ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Southern Victory Series
The ''Southern Victory'' series or Timeline-191 is a series of eleven alternate history novels by author Harry Turtledove, beginning with ''How Few Remain'' (1997) and published over a decade. The period addressed in the series begins during the Civil War and spans nine decades, up to the mid-1940s. In the series, the Confederate States defeats the United States of America in 1862, therefore making good its attempt at secession and becoming an independent nation. Subsequent books are built on imagining events based on this alternate timeline. The secondary name is derived from General Robert E. Lee's Special Order 191, which detailed the C.S. Army of Northern Virginia's invasion of the Union through the border state Maryland in September 1862. Turtledove creates a divergence at September 10, 1862, when three Union soldiers do not find a copy of Special Order 191, as they in fact did historically. Historians believe their find helped General George B. McClellan of the Army of ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Homeward Bound (Turtledove Novel)
''Homeward Bound'' (2004) is a science fiction and alternate history novel by Harry Turtledove. It is the eighth and final work in his '' Worldwar series'' fictional universe. It follows the events of the Colonization trilogy and gives some closure to the storylines. ''Homeward Bound'' begins in 1972 and then flashes forward to 1977, 1982, 1984, 1994, 2012, and finally 2031, when the American starship ''Admiral Peary'' arrives at Tau Ceti and Home, the homeworld of The Race. Title ''Homeward Bound'' has multiple meanings in the book. It is a pun in that the Race's home planet is called Home, and many characters are headed there. For characters that are members of the Race, such as Ttomalss, Atvar, and Straha, they are headed home after the failed conquest of Earth. For Kassquit, it is her cultural home although not her biological one. The Earth ship ''Admiral Peary'' is headed to the planet Home, where they will confront the Race and try to demand respect as an independent p ... Aftershocks
In seismology, an aftershock is a smaller earthquake that follows a larger earthquake, in the same area of the main shock, caused as the displaced crust adjusts to the effects of the main shock. Large earthquakes can have hundreds to thousands of instrumentally detectable aftershocks, which steadily decrease in magnitude and frequency according to a consistent pattern. In some earthquakes the main rupture happens in two or more steps, resulting in multiple main shocks. These are known as doublet earthquakes, and in general can be distinguished from aftershocks in having similar magnitudes and nearly identical seismic waveforms. Distribution of aftershocks Most aftershocks are located over the full area of fault rupture and either occur along the fault plane itself or along other faults within the volume affected by the strain associated with the main shock. Typically, aftershocks are found up to a distance equal to the rupture length away from the fault plane. The patt ... Second Contact
"Second Contact" is the series premiere of ''Star Trek: Lower Decks''. In the episode, characters on the USS ''Cerritos'', one of the "least important ships in Starfleet," must fight off a giant spider monster and a disease that has infected the crew of the ship, all while trying to make second contact with the people on the planet below. The episode received mixed reviews from critics. Plot D'Vana Tendi, an ensign who is new to Starfleet, arrives on the USS ''Cerritos'' and is immediately met by fellow ensigns Bradward "Brad" Boimler and Beckett Mariner, who give her the full tour of the lower decks of the ship. After that, Boimler is asked to meet with Captain Carol Freeman specifically. Worried, Boimler enters her office, where she tells him to keep an eye on Mariner, who has been acting up, e.g., getting drunk with Romulan whiskey while at work. But, unbeknownst to Boimler, Mariner is actually Freeman's daughter. Sure enough, while making "second contact" with a very cut-o ... Colonization (series)
''Colonization'' is a trilogy of alternate history books by American writer Harry Turtledove. It is a series continuation of the situation set up in the ''Worldwar'' tetralogy, projecting the situation between humanity and The Race (the bipedal lizard-like invaders and settlers from ''Worldwar'') nearly twenty years afterward, in the mid-1960s. The Race has settled and plans to colonize nearly half the surface of the Earth, including Africa, Australia, China, southern Asia, Mexico, Central America, South America, Spain, Portugal, and Poland (prewar Poland and East Prussia). The United States, Canada, the Soviet Union, the Greater German Reich (Germany and the territories that it occupied during World War II), the United Kingdom, and Japan are the only other powers when the Race's colonization fleet of 80–100 million settlers arrives. Humanity and The Race still jockey for advantages over each other. Novels Books of the Colonization trilogy are: * '' Colonization: Sec ...
