Palau,, officially the Republic of Palau and historically ''Belau'', ''Palaos'' or ''Pelew'', is an island country and microstate in the western Pacific. The nation has approximately 340 islands and connects the western chain of the Caroline Islands with parts of the Federated States of Micronesia. It has a total area of . The most populous island is Koror, home to the country's most populous city of the same name. The capital Ngerulmud is located on the nearby island of Babeldaob, in Melekeok State. Ngaraard
Ngaraard is the eighth state of the Republic of Palau, and was originally named Kerradel. History Ngaraard's history can be divided into four eras corresponding to Spanish, German and Japanese domination up to World War II. Spanish colonization During the Spanish era between the 16th century and 1899 a priest named Father Luis lived in Elab teaching Christianity. However, the people from Ngaraard did not accept Christianity, so he went to Melekeok to Chief Reklai, but no one there accepted it either, so he left for Ngchesar. On his way to Ngchesar, he became lost and fell ill. Chief Reklai heard about Father Luis so he sent people to look for him. They found Father Luis very sick, and the Melekeokians cared for him until he died. He was buried crosswise, unlike everyone else at the Uudes burial ground. Ngiwal
Ngiwal is one of the sixteen states of Palau. It has a population of 282 (census 2015) and an area of 26 km2 On June 21, 2018, Japan ambassador Toshiyuki Yamada gave Japan's multipurpose center to Ngiwal. Geography Ngiwal is situated between Melekeok and Ngaraard on the north central east coast of Babeldaob Island. Ngiwal extends from the coast to the Rael Kedam and includes the drainage of the Ngeredekuu River. The Ngeredekuu has its headwaters on the forested east flanks of the Rael Kedam and flows through a large northwest to southeast trending valley. A coastal ridge lies between the Ngeredekuu Valley and a broad sandy plain along the coast. Ngeremlengui
Ngeremlengui (also spelled Ngaremlengui,) is one of Palau's sixteen states. It has a population of 350 (according to the 2015 census), and is just west of the capital in Melekeok state. Geography Ngeremlengui, located on the north-central west coast, includes the large hill mass of Roismlengui and vast tracts of the interior along the Ngermeskang River. The modern villages of Ngeremlengui include inhabited settlements at Ngermetengel, Imeong,and Ngchemesed. Along the west coast between the inlet to Ngeremeduu Bay and the Chometubet River, the terrain is very rugged with some of the highest hills in Palau including Badechemetei. Ngchesar also known as Oldiais is one of the sixteen states of the nation of Palau in Oceania. History The terraces in the village of Ngerngesang are examples of archaeological sites in the area, through radiocarbon dating, are believed to date back to 491 and 1150 AD. Ngchesar like the rest of Palau was part of the Spanish Empire from the 16th century until 1899 when the territory was sold to the Empire of Germany who ruled the area until the end of World War I, at which time the Empire of Japan took over the area until the end of World War II when the United States took possession of the Territory. Ngatpang
Ngatpang is one of Palau's sixteen states. It comprises an area of around 47 square kilometers in the west of Palau's largest island, Babeldaob, facing onto Ngeremeduu Bay. The state capital is Ngerdubech. It has a population of 282, making it Palau's 9th largest state in population. Ibobang is in Ngatpang. It is a community dedicated to the practice of the Modekngei religion. Geography Ngatpang, which is located on the central west coast, includes a very large area of the interior to the southeast of Ngeremeduu Bay. Ngardmau
Ngardmau is one of Palau's sixteen states and is located on the west side of Babeldaob between the states of Ngaraard and Ngeremlengui. Geography The total area of Ngardmau is . At the time of the 2015 census, 185 people lived in the state. There were 46 households situated in three hamlets: Ngetbong, Ngerutoi and Urdmau. The hamlets have no visible boundaries, but instead form one settlement. Ngardmau is located on the northwest coast of Babeldaob and includes the long drainage basins of the Diongradid and the Irur Rivers. Ngardmau is bordered on the south by Ngeremlengui and on the east by Ngiwal and Ngaraard. The coast is lined with a thick fringe of mangroves.
