State Surgeon Of Ireland
The office of State Surgeon of Ireland, or State Chirurgeon, was created by patent, on 1 July 1774, and was first filled by Archibald Richardson, who resided in Stafford Street, Dublin. The salary was fixed at £131 13s. 4d. In 1784 George Stewart succeeded Richardson, who became Chirurgeon General; and in 1787, Stewart having become Chirurgeon-General, John Neill, or Neile, of Dominick Street, succeeded him. Gustavus Hume
Gustavus Hume (1730 – 7 February 1812) was the president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in the first part of 1795. He specialised in the diseases of children. He was one of the surgeons who examined the body of the journalist William Jackson (journalist), William Jackson after he died from poisoning in a Dublin court in 1795 while awaiting sentencing for high treason. Early life and family Gustavus Hume was born in 1730 to a family of Scottish origin, some of whom settled in Ireland in the seventeenth century. His father was Robert, and his grandfather was Thomas Hume, of Humewood, County Wicklow, who was an ancestor of the Irish Conservative politician William Wentworth FitzWilliam Dick, William Wentworth Fitzwilliam Hume-Dick. One of Hume's sons was the physician Thomas Hume (c. 1769–1850) and his great grandson was Lieutenant Colonel Sir Gustavus Hume (1826–1891) who served in the British Army during the Crimean War. Clement Archer
Clement Archer (December 21, 1748-1803) was a surgeon and president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). Clement Archer was born in County Wexford on December 21, 1748. He was educated as a surgeon, and on February 4, 1772, was examined by the County Infirmaries' Board, and "passed" for the Longford Infirmary. He settled in Dublin in 1774 and was an original member of the Surgeons' Society. In 1785, he, together with surgeons Bolger, Lindsay, Costelloe, Hartigan, and Graydon, and Drs. Brereton, Percival, Dickson, Kennedy, Bell, and Boyton, founded the Dublin General Dispensary in the old Post Office yard, Temple Bar, the treasurer being Sir William Newcomen. In 1797, Archer became Assistant Surgeon to Dr Steevens' Hospital and later succeeded John Whiteway as Surgeon of the Foundling Hospital. Charles Cameron (physician)
Sir Charles Alexander Cameron, CB (16 July 1830 – 27 February 1921) was an Irish physician, chemist and writer prominent in the adoption of medical hygiene. For over fifty years he had charge of the Public Health Department of Dublin Corporation. He was elected President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in 1885. Early life and education Cameron was born 1830 in Dublin, Ireland, the son of Captain Ewen Cameron of Scotland and Belinda Smith of County Cavan. He was descended from Clan Cameron of Lochiel. He received his early education in chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry in Dublin. In 1852 he was elected professor to the newly founded Dublin Chemical Society, while continuing to study medicine at several schools and hospitals in Dublin. In 1854 he went to Germany where he graduated in philosophy and medicine.
