''Stars of the Russian Ballet'' (russian: Мастера русского балета, Mastera russkogo baleta) is a 1953 Soviet ballet film trilogy, featuring abridged versions of ''Swan Lake'', ''The Fountain of Bakhchisarai'' and ''Flames of Paris''. The film headlined world-renowned ballerinas Maya Plisetskaya and Galina Ulanova, and was directed by Gerbert Rappaport. It was entered into the 1954 Cannes Film Festival. Gerbert Rappaport
Herbert Rappaport (1908–1983), known in the Soviet Union as Gerbert Moritsevich Rappaport, was an Austrian-Soviet screenwriter and film director. Rappaport was born in 1908 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, to Jewish parents from Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine). From 1927 to 1929 he studied law at University of Vienna. Rappaport worked as screenwriter, music editor, and assistant director in Austria, Germany, and the United States from 1928 onward. During the early 1930s he worked as an assistant to Georg Wilhelm Pabst. In 1936 he was officially invited to the Soviet Union to internationalize the Soviet Cinema which he accepted and spent the following 40 years working as a filmmaker there. Among Rappaport's best known films is an adaptation of Dmitri Shostakovich's ''Cheryomushki'' ("Cherry Town") (1963). Vakhtang Mikheilis dze Chabukiani (Russian: Вахта́нг Миха́йлович Чабукиа́ни, ka, ვახტანგ ჭაბუკიანი) (March 12, 1910 – April 6, 1992) was a Soviet and Georgian ballet dancer, choreographer and teacher. Yuri Andreyevich Zhdanov (russian: Ю́рий Андре́евич Жда́нов; 20 August 1919 – 19 December 2006) was a Soviet and Russian chemistry professor and rector of the University of Rostov. He was the son of Soviet politician Andrei Zhdanov and a former husband of Joseph Stalin's daughter, Svetlana Alliluyeva. Biography Yuri Zhdanov was born on August 20, 1919 in Tver. He graduated from Moscow State University in 1941 with a degree in organic chemistry and served with the Red Army during World War II. He received a Ph.D. in 1948. 1954 Cannes Film Festival
The 7th Cannes Film Festival was held from 25 March to 9 April 1954. With Jean Cocteau as President of the Jury, the Grand Prix went to the '' Gate of Hell'' by Teinosuke Kinugasa. The festival opened with '' Le Grand Jeu'' by Robert Siodmak. This was the last festival with a predominantly French jury. As the festival was becoming more and more a pole of showbiz attraction, scandals and romances of stars were appearing in the press. Galina Sergeyevna Ulanova (russian: Галина Сергеевна Уланова, ; 21 March 1998) was a Russian ballet dancer. She is frequently cited as being one of the greatest ballerinas of the 20th century. Biography Ulanova was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Both parents were the soloists of the Mariinsky theatre and danced with Anna Pavlova. Later, her father became a director and her mother taught ballet. Ulanova recalled that she 'never had a choice to pick a career' and due to her parents' profession, ballet was her only option. As a child she dreamed of becoming a sailor, saying she feared having the life of artists with lots of labour and no sleep.
