Staged Photography
Staged photography is a form of photography where the photographer, like a director, stages everything in advance to have full control over how his or her idea is visualized. Although the staging of a photograph was already common in the early days of photography, it was not distinguished as a separate genre until the 1980s, when some photographers began to establish themselves as conceptual artists. In contrast to, for example, candid shots or street photography, in staged photography, little is left to chance. The photographer's role is also not that of an objective observer who documents what is happening around him. After all, according to this view, a photo is not a realistic representation of a fleeting moment, but a creation of the photographer's imagination; the photographer tries to create a new reality with his work. Conceptual Photography
Conceptual photography is a type of photography that illustrates an idea. There have been illustrative photographs made since the medium's invention, for example in the earliest staged photographs, such as Hippolyte Bayard's ''Self Portrait as a Drowned Man'' (1840). However, the term Conceptual Photography derives from Conceptual Art a movement of the late 1960s. Today the term is used to describe either a methodology or a genre. Conceptual photography as a methodology As a methodology conceptual photography is a type of photography that is staged to represent an idea. The 'concept' is both preconceived and, if successful, understandable in the completed image. Joel-Peter Witkin
Joel-Peter Witkin (born September 13, 1939) is an American photographer who lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His work often deals with themes such as death, corpses (and sometimes dismembered portions thereof), often featuring ornately decorated photographic models, including people with dwarfism, transgender and intersex persons, as well as people living with a range of physical features which Witkin is often praised for presenting in poses which celebrate and honor their physiques in an elevated, artistic manner. Witkin's complex tableaux often recall religious episodes or classical paintings. Biography Witkin was born to a Jewish father and Roman Catholic mother. Tono Stano
Tono Stano (born 24 March 1960) is a Slovakia-born art photographer living and working in Prague, Czech Republic. Life and work Stano was born in Zlaté Moravce, now Slovakia. He attended the secondary school of applied arts in Bratislava from 1975 to 1979, and then, from 1980 to 1986, the FAMU in Prague (School of Film, Photography, and Television). Still during their studies, he and his fellow students (e.g. Miro Svolik) at FAMU developed a new style of staged photography, full of expressive movements and metaphor, partly influenced by performance art. Stano is mainly known for his black-and-white photographs of the female body. Several of his photographs have been used for the cover of photography books. Bruce Charlesworth
Bruce Charlesworth (born 1950) is an American artist, known primarily for his photographic, video and multimedia works. Early life and education Charlesworth was born in 1950 in Davenport, Iowa. He received his BA degree in Art from the University of Northern Iowa (1972) and his MFA degree in Painting from the University of Iowa in 1975. Work Charlesworth began to exhibit in New York and internationally with the photo-novellas ''Eddie Glove'' (1976–79), and ''Special Communiqués'' (1981). Jeffrey Wall, Order of Canada, OC, Royal Society of Canada, RSA (born September 29, 1946) is a Canadian artist best known for his large-scale back-lit Cibachrome photographs and art history writing. Early in his career, he helped define the Vancouver School and he has published essays on the work of his colleagues and fellow Vancouverites Rodney Graham, Ken Lum, and Ian Wallace (artist), Ian Wallace.
