Busby Berkeley (born Berkeley William Enos; November 29, 1895 – March 14, 1976) was an American film director and musical choreographer. Berkeley devised elaborate musical production numbers that often involved complex geometric patterns. Berkeley's works used large numbers of showgirls and props as fantasy elements in kaleidoscopic on-screen performances. Early life Berkeley was born in Los Angeles, California, to Francis Enos (who died when Busby was eight) and stage actress Gertrude Berkeley (1864–1946). Lulu McConnell (April 8, 1882 – October 9, 1962) was an American comic actress who performed in vaudeville, Broadway musicals, radio, and television. She was best known as a panelist on the comedic radio show '' It Pays to be Ignorant'', and for her distinctive raspy voice. McConnell was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1882. She began acting in church socials, and at the age of 17, joined a repertory theatre company, and later moved to the vaudeville circuit. She married fellow vaudeville performer Grant Simpson in 1907. She attributed her trademark "sawblade" voice to an instance of stage fright when performing at the Alhambra Theatre in 1910, causing her to lose her voice and rasp through the performance, to the approval of the audience. Andrew Tombes (29 June 1885 – 17 March 1976) was an American comedian and character actor. Biography The son of a grocer, originally from Ashtabula, Ohio, Tombes was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy. Early in his career, he worked as a vaudeville comic. By December 1914 he had appeared in the headlining act for the opening of the Kansas City Orpheum Theatre. He successfully ascended to Broadway comedies beginning in 1917, in the revue ''Miss 1917'', and appeared there consistently through the 1920s, for instance in ''Poor Little Ritz Girl'' in 1920, ''Tip-Toes'' in 1925, and the Ziegfeld Follies of 1922 and 1927. Tombes' first film appearances were in 1933, as he was already approaching 50 years old. He made a total of about 150 films for various studios. Cavanaugh attended the University of California. He worked in vaudeville, teaming with Walter Catlett at some point. Craig Reynolds (born Harold Hugh Enfield, July 15, 1907 – October 22, 1949) was an American film actor of the 1930s and 1940s. Early life and career Reynolds was born in Anaheim, California, in 1907, the son of Leila Maybelle (née Goold) and Oscar Davenport Enfield. Reynolds enjoyed a film career spanning the 1930s and 1940s, although the majority of his roles occurred during the first decade of his career. As an actor with Warner Brothers he was seen as a rising star and played second lead in several films throughout the 1930s. These included ''Paris in Spring'' (1935), '' Gold Mine in the Sky'' (1938) and ''The Mystery of Mr. Wong'' (1939). However, his career stalled after he left acting to join up during World War II. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his military service, and returned to acting following the war. Carol Hughes (born Catherine Mabel Hukill, January 17, 1910 – August 8, 1995) was an American actress. She is best remembered for her leading roles opposite Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, and for her role as Dale Arden in ''Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe'' (1940). Biography Hughes was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Charles, an upholsterer, and Mable Hukill (née Stift). Both of her parents were born in Chicago; her mother's grandparents were from Germany.
