Stadtschreiber Von Bergen
The Stadtschreiber von Bergen ('City clerk of Bergen') is an annual German literary award. The prize money is €20,000 with one year of free living in the town clerk's house in Bergen-Enkheim, Frankfurt, "An der Oberpforte 4". It was the first Stadtschreiber award in German-speaking countries and established in 1974. The Stadtschreiber has no obligations and can invite writers. A jury with nine members decides the winner. Katja Lange-Müller
Katja Lange-Müller (born 13 February 1951) is a German writer living in Berlin. Her works include several short stories and novellas, radio dramas, and dramatic works. The daughter of Inge Lange, an East German party functionary, Katja Lange-Müller was born in Berlin-Lichtenberg. She was expelled from school at the age of 17 for "unsocialist" behavior. From an early age, she and her circle of friends were carefully watched by the Stasi. Prevented from attending college, she first learned to be a typesetter, and later worked as a nurse in a psychiatric clinic. At the age of 28, she was accepted to the "Johannes R. Becher" Literature Institute in Leipzig, marking the beginning of her career as a writer. Uwe Timm
Uwe Timm (; born 30 March 1940 in Hamburg) is a German writer. Life and work Uwe Timm was born in the year 1940 in Hamburg. Uwe Timm was the youngest son in his family. His brother, 16 years his senior, was a soldier in the Waffen SS and died in Ukraine in 1943. Decades later, Uwe Timm approached his relationship with his father and brother in the critically acclaimed novel ''In my brother's shadow''. After working as a furrier, Timm studied Philosophy and German in Munich and Paris, achieving a PhD in German literature in 1971 with his thesis: ''The Problem of Absurdity in the Works of Albert Camus''. During his studies, Timm was engaged in leftist activities of the 1960s. He became a member of the Socialist German Student Union and was associated with Benno Ohnesorg. Wolfgang Hilbig
Wolfgang Hilbig (31 August 1941 2 June 2007) was a German writer and poet. Life Wolfgang Hilbig was born in Meuselwitz, Germany. His grandfather had emigrated from Biłgoraj (Congress Poland, Russian Empire) before the First World War. In 1942, his father was reported missing at Stalingrad, leaving behind Hilbig and his mother. After his schooling in his home town, Hilbig began to work at a boring mill. Later, after military service, he worked as a tool maker and in assembly construction at the Meuselwitz lignite mine. In 1978, Hilbig moved to East Berlin, and in 1979 he became an independent writer. In 1985, he left the GDR with a travel visa and moved to West Germany. He lived in Berlin after the fall of the Berlin Wall and married writer and translator Natascha Wodin in 1994. They had one daughter and divorced in 2002. Peter Kurzeck
Peter Kurzeck (June 10, 1943 – November 25, 2013) was a German writer. Life Peter Kurzeck was born on June 10, 1943 in Tachau, Reichsgau Sudetenland, Nazi Germany. In 1946, his family moved to Germany and Kurzeck was raised in Staufenberg near Giessen, Hesse. As a young man, he wrote for local newspapers and magazines. In 1977, he moved to Frankfurt am Main, Hesse, Germany. Since the mid-1990s, Kurzeck has been working on a multi-volume autobiographical novel project entitled ''Das alte Jahrhundert'' (''The Old Century'') which, according to its narrative framework, is based in Frankfurt am Main in 1984. He died on November 25, 2013 in Frankfurt am Main. Legacy Kurzeck's daughter Carina inherited the rights to his work. Wulf Kirsten
Wulf Kirsten (21 June 1934 – 14 December 2022) was a German poet, novelist, and publisher. He is known for his nature poetry and his essays on the history and culture of Saxony. The son of a stonemason, Kirsten was born in Klipphausen, Meissen on 21 June 1934. He worked as salesman, bookkeeper and labourer before graduating from the Workers' and Farmers' College (''Arbeiter- und Bauern-Fakultät'') of Leipzig in 1960, and then completed a teaching degree in German and Russian in 1964. At the same time he worked on a freelance basis for the compilers of the ''Dictionary of the Upper Saxon Dialects'', providing them with more than a thousand words from his own household. After obtaining his degree, he worked briefly as a teacher, and then in 1965 moved to Weimar to work for the Aufbau Verlag publishing house, where he would stay until 1987. Arnold Stadler
Arnold Stadler (born 1954) is a German writer, essayist and translator. Life He was born on 9 April 1954 in Meßkirch in the district of Sigmaringen in Baden-Württemberg in Germany. Stadler grew up on a farm in Rast, a small village adjoining Sauldorf, a neighboring village of his birthplace Meßkirch. Stadler studied catholic theology in Munich and Rome, German philology at Freiburg im Breisgau and Köln, ending with a doctoral degree (Dr. phil.). Herta Müller (; born 17 August 1953) is a Romanian-born German novelist, poet, essayist and recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature. Born in Nițchidorf (german: Nitzkydorf, link=no), Timiș County in Romania, her native language is German. Josef Winkler (born 3 March 1953) is an Austrian writer. Biography Josef Winkler was born in Kamering near Paternion in Carinthia (Kärnten) and grew up on his parents' farm. He describes his home as a world without language ("sprachlose Welt") and early on felt drawn to language as a mode of self-expression. He grew up in the context of a difficult triangle – a rather rough father, by whom he felt rejected; a mother who lost her own brothers early on and fell silent; and a deaf-mute farmgirl. When his mother explained that there was no money for books, Winkler soon recognized the (intellectual) class difference between the sons of farmers and teachers. Paul Nizon
Paul Nizon (born 19 December 1929 in Bern) is a Swiss art historian and writer. Biography The son of a Russian chemist and a Swiss mother, after leaving school he studied history of art, classical archaeology and German language and literature in the universities of Berne and Munich. He obtained his doctorate in 1957 with a thesis on Vincent van Gogh. He worked as an assistant at the Historisches Museum in Berne until 1959. In 1960, he was awarded a scholarship at the Swiss Institute in Rome. In 1961, he was a leading art critic of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Since 1962 Nizon, who has lived in Paris since 1977, has been a freelance writer. He has held various guest lectureships, including in 1984 in the University of Frankfurt am Main and 1987 in Washington University in St. Louis.
