St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane (also known as Mt Olivet Hospital) is a hospital located in the suburb of Kangaroo Point in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. St Vincent's Private Hospital was established as part of St Vincent's Health Australia, the largest Catholic non-profit healthcare provider. The hospital redevelopment to increase its capacity and expand services was completed in 2010. History The land on which the hospital stands originally belonged to Dr Lilian Violet Cooper, Queensland's first female doctor and surgeon. The Sisters of Charity of Australia (who use the postnominal initials of RSC) is a congregation of religious sisters in the Catholic Church who have served the people of Australia since 1838. History Mother Mary Aikenhead, who had founded the Religious Sisters of Charity in 1815 in Dublin, Ireland, then part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, was requested by John Bede Polding OS., the first Catholic bishop in Australia, to send some sisters to help the many female convicts who had been transported to Australia as penalty for their crimes. Lilian Violet Cooper (11 August 1861 - 18 August 1947 Brisbane) was a British-born medical practitioner in Queensland, Australia. She was the first female doctor registered in Queensland. Early life and education Lilian Cooper was born in Clapham, South London on 11 August 1861, to parents Henry Fallowfield Cooper, a captain in the Royal Marines, and his wife Elizabeth Shewell. She chose to study medicine at the London School of Medicine for Women in 1886. After completing the course in October 1890 she qualified as a doctor at the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh, studying also at the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow. Mary Josephine Bedford (1861 – 22 December 1955) was a philanthropist in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, who was involved in family welfare and children's development through her involvement with the Playground Association and the Crèche and Kindergarten Association. She was awarded the Order of St Sava for her services as an ambulance driver in World War I. Early life Mary Josephine Bedford was born in 1861 in England.
